Sometimes we don't want or need to use the noun in a sentence, we may need to use a name or a personal pronoun. A Personal Pronoun replaces the noun - it goes in place of the noun. For example in one of the sentences above, instead of saying 'The man is going' we said 'He is going'.
In te reo Māori they are a little more complicated as you will notice in the table to the right.
E kai ana au = I am eating
E kai ana ia = He/she/it is eating
E kai ana koe = You are eating
E kai ana rāua - they (2 people) are eating
E kai ana mātou - We (3 or more but not you who is listening to us) are eating
Ko Anne ahau - I am Anne
Kei te pēhea koe? - How are you? (addressing one person)
Kei te aha ia? What is he/she doing?
Kei te aha kōrua? What are you two doing?
Kei te aha rāua? - What are they (those two ) doing?
Kei te aha koutou? - What are you (more than 3) doing?
Kei te aha rātou - What are they (3 or more ) doing?
Me haere tāua?- Shall we go (the two of us?)
Me haere māua? - Shall we go ( the two of us but not the listener or other person in the group)
Me haere tātou? - Shall we all go (more than 3 of us including everyone?)
Me haere mātou? - Shall we go ( 3 or more of us but not everyone.)
More on this later ....
