The Communication Institute was established in 1979 to advance interdisciplinary understandings of communication. The Institute's books, monographs, and journals share insights across a broad range of disciplines and application.

The foundation journals Australian Scan and Australian Journal of Communication published perspectives on public communication, creative and educational literature, speech, drama, film, and television, organizational communication, interpersonal and small group interaction, intercultural communication, mass communication, and media studies.

As a young faculty member, Rodney Miller founded and for more than a decade edited The Institute's publications, while teaching communication at Queensland University of Technology (QUT). He has since led the advancement of innovative education at QUT and universities in the United States and internationally.
