In late 20’s, Library was using the traditional system. Time goes by as the technology is growing and the evolution of digital library was being produced. Even though the paradigm by which users access and interact with information in the digital library they still are using the traditional library in different cases.

TRADITIONAL LIBRARY SYSTEM

CARD CATALOGUE

In a traditional library system, users may look for the book that they interest with. This is done by using the card catalogue. It is a method by which the library puts a system of all its acquisition. It is a filing cabinet contains all the cards that are arranged in alphabetical order. Guide letters are on the front of each drawer tell what cards are in the drawer.  There are 3 types of it: Author Catalogue, Title Catalogue, and Subject Catalogue. It contains the location symbol where the book located in the library; call number where class number, author number, and copyright date are stated; Author where personal or corporate author is stated; Title of the Book; Imprint where place and date of publication, edition, and name of publisher are stated; Collation where description of the physical properties of the book such as number of volumes, pages illustrations are stated.

The three types of Catalogue:

1. Author Catalogue helps you when you know the author. Author card is being used in here. The word on the top line is the author’s name. This card is filed alphabetically by the name.  (see figure 1.1)

2. Title Catalogue directs you to shelves if you know a book by its title. Title Card is being used in here. The title card is the same as the author card, except that the title card of the book is typed at the top of the card above the author’s name. This is filed alphabetically by the first word on the top line, unless the first word is a, an, or the. (see figure 2.2)

                                                       figure 2.2

3. Subject Catalogue is helpful when you want to search for a book by its subject. A subject card is being used. The subject card is the same as the author card, except that the top line tells the subject within the book. There will be a card for each book that the library has on the particular subject. (see figure 3.3)

It is important to understand the basics of the DDC system because it gives a location number of the item on the shelves.

The Second Summary Division of Dewey Decimal Classification

Illustration how to use the DDC

Example:

o   Fundamentals of Nursing by Patricia A. Potter is located on the shelf 610.7301 P851 2001

o   This number 610.7301 P851 2001 is a call number (shelf number) which can be found spine back of the book.

o   The 610 is the DDC of Medical Sciences and Medicine and these are arranged on the shelves.

O   Then followed by a decimal point with a number 7301 that indicates the sub-divisions of the main division, also it is arranged according to its number.

o   The P 851 Is the Author Letter and Number and the 2001 is the copyright date. These two are being used to arrange alphabetically in cases where items or books have exactly the same DDC but differ in author and copyright date.
