Choir

Welcome to the Butler High School Choir website! This will be your go-to place to find information about the choral program. Here is an overview of the various classes along with a description of the curriculum:

Beginning/Intermediate Treble and Bass Choirs

Beginning and intermediate choral students will sing in ensembles divided by vocal part--tenors and basses in the Bass Choir, sopranos and altos in the Treble Choir. Both groups will perform a variety of music in unison, 2-part, and 3-part voice divisions.

Concert Choir

This is a mixed ensemble for students who have already sung in one of the beginning ensembles. Most songs will be divided SATB or 3 part mixed with a moderate level of difficulty. We continue to hone our musicianship skills.

Women's Chamber Choir and Mixed Chamber Choir

These ensembles are the top performing groups at Butler. Admission to these groups is by approval from the director. Both groups perform at the annual Music Performance Adjudication festival held at Wingate University. These groups perform pieces at a higher level of difficulty.

All of the above ensembles cover three main areas of instruction: musical literacy, musical response, and contextual relevancy. Musical literacy refers both to vocal technique--the skills required to sing with the best possible tone and expression--as well as learning the language of music--notation, terminology, sight-reading, etc. Musical response concerns analyzing and interpreting music. Contextual relevancy refers to understanding music in cultures around the world, its historical roots, and its role in our 21st Century society. These three areas are addressed in classes with increasing depth and rigor as students move from beginning to advanced levels of choral music.
