Art History

This course will cover art from the Paleolithic period through Postmodernism and is designed to provide students with the same material covered in an introductory college course in art history. Students gain knowledge of architecture, sculpture, painting, and other art forms within diverse historical and cultural contexts.

Students will become skilled at writing a formal analysis ofartworks and will be able to verbalize their aesthetic experiences to others. These writing skills will be important in the description, analysis and comparison of these works. Students will learn how to look at art rather than simply identifying and categorizing.

In order to understand the similarities and differences that we share with ancient cultures, we will explore the icons or symbolism, techniques, developing artistic processes, and the political, religious, social, economic, scientific, technological background of the art.

AP Art History will be treated as a college course. Students will require a great deal of self-discipline, motivation and demonstrate a mature work ethic. It is the student’s responsibility to keep up with the reading, studying, and turning in all assignments on time.

The AP Art History Exam is 3 hours long and includes both a 60-minute multiple-choice and a 120-minute free-response section. Performance on these four parts will be compiled and weighted to determine an AP Exam score.

Section I: Multiple Choice; 60 minutes

  • 80 questions total; approximately 35 discrete questions and 45 questions in sets
  • 50% of total exam score

Section II: Free-Response; 120 minutes

  • 6 questions total; two 30-minute essay questions and four 15-minute essay questions
  • 50% of total exam score
