The Sports Medicine Pathway is for students who enjoy working with their hands, working with people, healthcare, and technical skills. Possible careers in this field include Athletic Trainer, Personal Trainer, Exercise Physiologist, Physical Therapist, Orthopedist, Sports Medician Physician, and Physician Assistant.
College Preparatory
This course will teach students the components of exercise science including an anatomy overview, kinesiology, basic principles of safety, first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), AED use, and vital signs. The course focuses on the principles governing the prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. Subject matter also includes career choices and application of sports medicine concepts relative to becoming a healthcare professional, legal issues, protective sports equipment, environmental safety issues, principles of taping and wrapping, mechanisms of injury and application of other sports medicine concepts. This course will benefit students interested in the fields of athletic training, physical therapy, medicine, exercise physiology, nursing, biomechanics, nutrition, psychology, and radiology. Students’ clinical experience may include the opportunity to participate in the student athletic training program as a student aide.

Prerequisite: Sports Medicine 1
This course emphasizes the assessment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. Subject matter will include discussion of specific conditions and injuries that may be experienced by individuals participating in athletic activities. In addition, the use of appropriate therapeutic modalities and exercise in the care and rehabilitation of injuries will be examined. A focus on deeper understanding of body systems and common pathologies will be included. Advanced concepts related to the administrative aspects of the sports medicine program will also be covered in this course. Other career roles in sports medicine will be discussed as the Athletic Trainer takes the injured athlete through the pathway of recovery. Students’ clinical experience may include the opportunity to participate in the student athletic training program as a student aide.

Honors
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Sports Medicine 1 & 2 with instructor recommendation. Students will be required to complete clinical observation hours in the community.
Sports Medicine 3 emphasizes the student’s ability to apply concepts from previous Sports Medicine course work to real world situations and scenarios. Priority will be placed on understanding current research and evidence-based practices affecting the practice of Sports Medicine professionals. Students will explore and develop detailed treatment and rehabilitation procedures for common athletic injuries. Students are expected to participate in clinical settings at school with the Clover High School Athletic Training program and outside clinical settings in orthopedics and physical therapy. Students must provide transportation to and from clinical sites. This course also requires after school time.
