College Preparatory
This course is designed as an introduction of skills required for a career in the care, education, and administration of programs for young children. Students will develop skills in areas including developmentally appropriate practices, safe and healthy learning environments and collaborative relationships. Students will also complete five hours of community services. Interaction with preschool children will be required. A clean discipline record in the year preceding enrollment is required. Integration of the Family and Consumer Sciences student organization, Family Careers and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), enhances this curriculum.

NOTE: At this level, students will begin earning college credit for York Tech courses which are embedded into the class. Students also have the option of staying in the program but not participating in Dual Enrollment. Early Childhood 1 then remains a CP level class for these students. Dual Enrollment options will be discussed during the IGP and the first week of class.
College Prepatory or Dual Enrollment
CP Prerequisites: Introduction to Early Childhood Education and must have passed all ninth grade core classes
DE Prerequisites: 85% or higher in Intro to Early Childhood and York Technical College entrance requirements
This course provides an introduction to career planning, child development, regulations, safety, and related topics for students interested in a profession working with children. Learning experiences are planned so students can begin acquiring the skills needed by childcare workers to guide, instruct, and care for young children. Students will apply their skills by working in the childcare lab. Students must complete 5 hours of community service and job shadowing in the childcare field as part of this course. Students must have a clean discipline record the year prior to enrolling in this class. Priority will be given to students in the eleventh grade.

Dual Enrollment options will be discussed during the IGP and the first week of class. Class may be offered Early Bird or during the regular school day. This determination will be made and announced prior to the finalization of course requests.
Honors or Dual Enrollment
DE Prerequisites: 85% or higher in Early Childhood Education 1 and must meet college acceptance requirements
In this course, students will take on more leadership roles by planning and implementing lessons in the childcare lab. Completion of 10 hours of community service and participation in two separate job-shadowing opportunities is required. Students registering for this course must have a clean discipline record, obtain teacher recommendations and return them before their schedule can be finalized. This course is designed for students seeking employment or continuing education in the childcare or teaching field. Potential career opportunities include: childcare worker or early childhood assistant teacher. Students seeking post-secondary education are prepared to pursue further programs of study in early childhood education.
ECD 131, Language Arts, is a study of methods and materials in age- appropriate language experiences. Opportunities are provided to develop listening, speaking, prereading and prewriting skills through planning, implementation, and evaluation of media, methods, techniques and equipment. Methods of selection, evaluation, and presentation of children’s literature are included.
ECD 203, Growth and Development II, is an in-depth study of preschool children growing and developing in today’s world. Focus is on “total” development of the child with emphasis on physical, social, emotional, cognitive, and nutritional areas of development. Developmental tasks and appropriate activities are explored in the course.

In ECD 132, Creative Experiences, the importance of creativity and independence in creative expression are stressed. A variety of age-appropriate media, methods, techniques and equipment are utilized. Students plan, implement, and evaluate instructional activities.
ECD 135, Health, Safety, and Nutrition, covers a review of health/safety practices recommended for child care and includes information on common diseases and health problems. Certification preparation is provided in pediatric safety, CPR, and first aid. Guidelines and information on nutrition and developmentally appropriate activities are also studied in the course.
