WRT421A – Writing
This course is designed to support students as they strive to meet the writing demands of academic-level high school courses and post-secondary study. Instruction is focused on the writing process (pre-writing, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing/sharing) and the research process (topic selection, researching, note taking, planning, writing, and documenting sources). Practical strategies are explicitly taught and modelled to support each stage of the above processes. Extended practice with these strategies prepares students to approach any writing task with added confidence and expertise. Students will receive instruction on how to adapt their writing to suit a variety of audiences and purposes, employing a wide range of formats such as essays, paragraphs, e-mails, reports, personal journals, letters, and many others. The essential elements of clear and effective writing (ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions) are emphasized throughout.
Recommendation: Encouraged for all academic students as a foundational course for English Language Arts.
