Practicing presenting their Heritage Fair projects to their peers. Students also asked questions like the judges will.
April 28th - May 2nd
This will be a very exciting week for both students and parents. On Wednesday, students will be participating in our mini Heritage Fair. Due to our move this year, only grade 5 French Immersion students are participating and no external judges are adjudicating. For this reason, all students who score a 36/40 or higher will have their name put in a draw to decide who will have the chance to go to the provincial Heritage Fair. Next year, we will return to the normal procedure. Good luck to all students on Wednesday, as you share your hard work and expertise.
Parents and their adult friends are also able to have a night of celebration as Sherwood's Home and School Playground Fundraising committee is hosting a night of music and comedy. Please consider buying a ticket for yourself and inviting your friends as well. The night is a 19+ event and the better the turnout, the more money can be put towards our new playground. We are continuing to move along in all subjects. Students started a long division test today and will complete it tomorrow. They are able to use any strategy of their choice. We are doing a weekly division facts quiz up to 81 ÷ 9 on Tuesdays followed by weekly multiplication facts quiz on Thursdays.
Many students have completed most of their research and paragraph writing for their Heritage projects. This week, students are focusing on editing spelling, grammar, punctuation, and gender (masculin ou feminin) and number (singulier ou pluriel) agreement. Students will also be planning out their tri-fold board using a paper template. I have purchased trifold boards for students that need them. Please send in 3.25$ to cover the cost of a trifold if you would like one.

Math: We've wrapped up multiplying 2 digit by 2 digit. We're moving on to dividing 3 digits by 1 digit, with and without remainders (247 ÷ 8 = ). Please continue to practice math facts up to 9X9 with your child. Students must have theses facts mastered for grade 6.
Writing:
In French we are now beginning to take the research that has been done at home and organize it into paragraphs. Students can either write full French sentences right away, or first translate their bullet points to French and then write a sentence. Translating can be difficult for many, and I do not expect them to have perfect vocabulaire. I continue to remind them that they are in grade 5 and that their sentences should reflect that. Any student caught using a translation service will be asked to redo their paragraphs by hand at school. We have discussed at length when it is appropriate to use DeepL; for a precise word or for a short expression.
In English, students have completed their first draft of their biography and we will be working on strategies to first edit, then revise.
Grammar:
French - We are working on the verbs Avoir and Etre, both orally and written. We are also reviewing according the determinant et the subject (mon chat, une maison, la classe, son crayon)
English - We are learning about correlative conjunction, which are pairs of words that work together to connect equal parts of a sentence ( either...or/ just as ....so)
