Basics
Google is Google answer to meetings, Google Meet had different names in the past but the most know would be Google Hangouts. Google Meet backend is based on the YouTube and is using the same technology.
That's why there a lot of different advantages about using Google Meet, for example from secure end to end encryption or the use of advanced Noise Canceling options that really work.
You can find go Meet by going to meet.google.com, click on the link or select Google Meet from the 9 blocks in the top right corner.
Pre-checks
Before joining a Meet, check your audio and video.
Before joining a video call, in the Meet welcome screen check microphone, speakers and camera by selecting the three icons on the bottom.
Or click the three dots in the screen and select Settings.
In the Settings, check the Audio section for the microphone and speakers in order to test them. The Video section can be used for the camera and lighting adjustments.
Companion mode
Join a Meet while inside the same room with other people without echoes.
Use Companion mode to join a call without the microphone option to avoid echoes.
If you are in the same room with other people and everyone is joining the same video call using their own computer (as second screen) in order to present later or ask questions, it is better to join using Companion mode instead of a direct join.
The main call will be in the room (microphone and speakers provided by a central device) while you can use your computer as a second screen to ask questions, raise your hand, present your screen etc.
Transcripts and recording
Start recording and enable the Meet’s transcripts (English only).
In a meeting, click Activities (blue icoon).
In the panel select Recording to record the meeting: the recording file will be added to the calendar invite.
In the panel select Transcripts (available only for English language) to write down a meeting conversation.
Captions and translated CC
Turn on subtitles and translated CC for your Meet.
Click the three dots and then select the gear icon Settings.
Select Captions and use the toggle to activate them. Select also the meeting language to set them correctly.
You can also select the Translated captions to translate a meeting held in a language into another language.
Browse and manage a presentation directly from Meet.
Open Google Drive and select the presentation (in Google Slides or PowerPoint format).
Open the document from Google Drive in a new tab using Google Slides by double clicking on it.
In the meeting, click Present now.
Select A tab.
In the pop up window, select the presentation tab from the list, then click Share.
In the meeting tab, click Start slideshow to start presenting your presentation
Use the arrows to move through the slides.
If the presenter notes are added to the presentation you can also see them (not displayed to the others) clic
Picture in picture
Take action on urgent matters without leaving a videoconference.
Click the three dots and then select Open picture in picture.
The call is moved into a pop up window letting you free to move across tabs, but being still able to participate in the meeting and see/hear the participants.
