There are different ways to get files in to your Google Drive, the most know one is Uploading Files towards the Google Drive, but also sharing, opening or syncing will add files to your Google Drive. So be aware that if you open a file on the internet and it has a link beginning with <app>.google.com, it will be opened in your Google Drive and will be added to your Shared with me section. This will count as a file shared with you, personal account.
Depending on your Internet connection, file size and other factors it can change how fast a file can be uploaded and downloaded from Google Drive.
It's possible to upload directly from the browser; you can do this by selecting the file (or folder) and move (drag and drop) it towards your Google Drive (internet browser) the file will be uploaded.
Uploading with the browser
It's also possible to upload the file by using the right click (without dragging and dropping the file). Go with your mouse pointer towards the middle of the screen with all files and press the right click on your mouse. Now a new dialog will open and the option to upload the file or folder will be given. It's also possible to go to Create in the top left and select upload file.
Google Drive Application on your PC / MAC
If you have the Google Sync application installed on your PC or MAC. It's also to upload from this program. In finder or my computer it's possible to find a extra disk called Google Drive. This disk, when you open it will have the following folders; My Drive and Shared Drives.
When you open this folder and click on the file it will be opened in your web browser. Every Google document is a shortcut towards the file in the database with the unique LinkID, it's not possible for you to open the file on your computer without downloading it first, because you don't have access to the database.
That's why the file will be opened in your web browser.
