Renovations on Outside Doors
We were told that W.R. Coile Middle School will be renovated in January 2018. One of the renovations was said to be, removing the door that leads outside of the school from each classroom. However, many teachers feel this isn’t a good idea. This is because, these door allow students to exit the building quicker during fire drills or even real fires. There are also other reasons that removing those doors wouldn’t be the best idea.
To start, these exit doors in each classroom are there for safety. Removing them wouldn’t put W.R. Coile in a good light. If the teachers feel that this is a bad idea then the head of our district will too. We don’t want people to focus on this safety hazard, we want everyone to focus on our academic excellence. Removing these doors would remove a quicker route outside the school during fire drills or real fires. There could be a fire in the hallway and we need to use these doors to exit the building. Without these doors, we would have no way to exit the building and the hallway could be crowded with other students attempting to leave as well. This would cause serious injuries or even casualties.
Another reason to keep these doors is because they provide a more efficient and quiet way for teachers to allow their students to go outside on the field. Sometimes, teachers like to reward their students for their hard work by letting them go outside to play soccer, play basketball, talk to their friends, or just enjoy some fresh air. When they want to do this, they usually use these exit doors in their classroom to prevent chaos in the hallway. This helps the other teachers trying to teach their class because it prevents the students from being noisy in the hall and causing a distraction for other students.
Lastly, these doors simply allow fresh air in the classroom. For example, a teacher’s A/C may not be working correctly at the moment so they might want some fresh air in the classroom. Some teachers may just like the idea of letting their students get some fresh air and listen to the sound of nature while they are working. Since we are inside of a building for most of the day, this little bit of access to natural air helps. Plus, it makes a room look less closed in and more open.
There are many reasons why removing these doors in the classrooms would be a bad idea. Including the issue of, safety, efficiency, and even just the option of fresh air. Many teachers and even students disagree with this decision. As for me, I agree that this wouldn't benefit our school because of all the issues that could be created. We should keep our doors and all the freedoms and safety they provide us with.
