Mr. Dery:
I was born in Victoria, B.C., and graduated from Malaspina University in 2002. I have Education and History degrees, and have been fortunate to work with ELL students in programs at both Camosun College and the University of Victoria for over 20 years. I have been teaching at St. Patrick’s School for 16 years and presently teach English language learners and Primary Physical Education.
The St. Patrick’s English Language Learning Program is focused on strengthening students’ English language skills in reading, speaking and listening. Students attend 2-3 classes per week with a small group of their peers.
Part of our program for students includes the use of Lexia Core5 Reading Skills. This is a computer-based program that allows for individualized practice of skills that are specific to students' needs, enabling them to develop fundamental English language skills. To further support students’ learning, the children participate in oral communication activities during weekly ELL classes and field trips.
