I have continued my commitment for NHS in grade 12 by participating in various types of fundraisers that aim to raise money for local organizations in Cayman. Two of the events that I have had a prominent role in were the Halloween Cookie Grams and the Holiday Movie Buy-Out. Within the cookie grams, students would pay to send a pack of cookies to a classmate - the cookies were Halloween themed. Moreover, for the holiday movie, students were able to buy their way out of class to watch a movie, which took place right before the midterm break.
Both of the events were successful is raising money for organizations, but they also were successful for my personal development and growth since I was able to practice my leadership skills, ability to initiate a plan, and show dedication to CIS's NHS branch. Likewise, I assisted in making posters, selling the cookie grams during lunchtime, setting up the movie, and ensuring that all participants were enjoying the event. Thus, something I felt went well during both events was all member's ability to collaborate within their groups to produce well-structured fundraisers that can be repeated in the future.
However, something that I found challenging with being a part of NHS and spending time planning and setting up these events was that I lacked the free-time to fully engage with NHS. At some points, I would find myself so consumed with my school assignments that it was hard for me to find a balance between community service and engaging with my community and the stresses of the IB. Nonetheless, I overcame this challenge by working with other people, since this allows responsibilities to be divided up and therefore make it less demanding for one person.
