The Wellness Ambassador club at my school is focused on improving and promoting the mental health of students and faculty members. Moreover, the club has hosted events such as puppy yoga and bake sales and set up "Wellness Baskets" in the girl's restrooms. These Baskets included essential goods like hair ties, feminine products, tissues, etc. All events or services that the club plans are dedicated to informing fellow students about steps that can be taken to achieve a more well-sustained and fulfilling mental health.
Along with attending club meetings and helping plan events, I had the opportunity to assist with the puppy yoga event. I helped set up, cleaned the area, assisted the participants, cleaned up, and provided positive and encouraging affirmations. This involvement helped me better understand other people's experiences and what struggles they could grapple with in their own lives.
Being part of the Wellness Ambassadors reflects upon my character. I am always willing to help out my peers and prioritize their needs above my own in times of distress. Creating a sense of empathy is important because it is the foundation for strong, friendly, and professional relationships.
I was inducted into my school's NHS branch in March 2023. Although service events started slowly, I was able to participate in bake sales and an ice cream sale that the new members were in charge of. I communicated with my schoolmates (both in grade 10 and in the years above), fostered a friendly environment, and took on cleaning jobs.
During my first year as an NHS member, I gained experience working with all types of people, learned the value of community service, and learned what it takes to be a leader. Moreover, I developed my character by speaking up when I had ideas and thoughts and then finding ways to execute my plans while being inclusive and respectful.
I helped my soccer coaches, Ms. GG and Ms. Jayme, coach the middle school girls' soccer team with a few other players. I assisted in teaching drills, planning warmups and activities, giving helpful advice during games, and supporting young girls when learning the sport. We need to volunteer with this team since it widens the school's soccer program while promoting healthy competition among girls in Cayman.
I enjoyed this experience and continued it for the following two years. It was very rewarding to connect with the middle schoolers and create bonds for when they enter high school!
Acts of Random Kindness (ARK) is a non-profit organization that embodies the goal of being a friend to people of all ages who are struggling or in crisis scenes through acts of service. My school has a smaller branch of the organization in which we assist the programs in any way possible.
I participated in my school's ARK Halloween Carnival, which raised money for the organization's many initiatives and plans! This event was successful, as we raised $600. My friend and I ran the popcorn stand and had a fantastic time raising money for the greater good of Cayman.
Being a member of ARK during my first year in a different country really exposed me to the vast types of circumstances people can be in and the importance of never judging but offering a kind hand. I became further integrated into my community as I learned about some local non-profit companies and had the chance to engage in activities with new people.
