Project 2025: Yet to be determined!
Planning a year in advance is not part of the African culture, and even less so in a foundation that relies solely on donations.
Possibilities of projects include: building garden equipments, painting the school walls, building / refurbishing / decorating work on the expanding deaf students' boarding facilities....
We will help by bringing the funds needed by the school, and also by bringing what the school needs at that time. (eg: reusable lunch boxes & water bottles, sports and learning equipment, clothes etc). We will ask the foundation to provide us with a list of what they need once the trip participants list is finalised.
Should Les Cajoutiers not have any current building project, the financial donations will be used by the foundation to support the students in their care: eg: paying for school equipment, meals, health checks, uniforms, boarding school...
Please note: The project with Les Cajoutiers will be clarified at the start of the school year. A lot of change can happen in the two months of the summer. They are hoping to gather enough funds to launch the relocation of the boarding house to expand and welcome more deaf boarding students. This will involve the complete restructuring of an existing school building into a living quarter. This will cost 56000€ and in February they had already raised 27 000 €. Our work on-site will depend on whether or not (and when) they are able to raise the remaining 29 000€ to fund the full cost.
Also, please note: it is possible that we will not be able to 'physically' contribute to the building of the project we would be financing, as we are students, not experts in the construction field. If the foundation receives donations from other parties, we can't expect them to wait and not start until we come.
Our Minimum goal : 2000 HKD per student
Our ideal goal: 4000 HKD per student
Glimpse back in time: CIS's past contributions :
Senegal Project 2024:
Funds: Les Cajoutiers was still recovering from losing several major donators due to the Covid crisis, struggling to make ends meet. (Unfortunately, many of their sponsors in Europe had gone bankrupt because of Covid and were no longer able to support them.) The Funds raised by CIS Senegal 2024 allowed the 1000 + students to be fed by the canteen for 3 months !
Donations : CIS Senegal 2024 brought plenty of school equipment, clothes, shoes, and mosquito nets to equip each bed of the boarding house.
On-site: CIS Senegal 2024 contributed on two projects: building sustainable garden beds and painting a mural on a wall of the multi-purpose learning center. The same wall where CIS Senegal 2019 had signed on the bricks to leave a mark of their own contribution! We have gone full cycle :)
Project 2019: A multi-purpose learning center!
Aim: Students will be able to have a range of workshop areas to develop motricity skills (kindergarten) and learn lifelong skills (older pupils & pupils with disability), including skills that can lead to a professional training in the future. The space will take the learning out of the classroom and will also include a Projection room, an essential pedagogical tool!
Size: The surface area of the project is 376 sqm / 4000 sqf. It's an additional floor on top of the kindergarten building.
Progress when we were there: They had built the foundation and the well, and were in the phase of installing electricity and windows. They had already completed the building work we could have helped with, and the space was not ready yet for the painting for us. Instead we surprised the Down Syndrome school by decorating their classroom walls during their day off: they were so happy when they came back the next day and saw the beautiful paintings!
See below photos of the students happily using their new multipurpose space!
Les Cajoutiers students enjoying their new multi-purpose space. This building was partly financed thanks to the Senegal Project 2019 team!
Thank you CIS !
