The purpose of this Service trip is to help the local community in a Senegalese village and to break the misconceptions towards "black Africa" often encountered here in Hong Kong.
The Senegal Project will be working closely with Les Cajoutiers de Warang, an association providing education, food and socio-medical care to impoverished, deaf and disabled children in Senegal. Les Cajoutiers's pupils are all coming from some of the poorest families in the area. The school welcomes primary students from nearby villages and offers a boarding school for deaf students from deprived families from all over the country. It is divided in four sections: a general primary section, a section for deaf students (Graines de Cajou), an inclusive section where both hearing and deaf students learn together (EISEC) and a section for children with Down Syndrome (Fleurs de Cajou). Les Cajoutiers relies solely on donations and sponsorships to cover the costs of running the school and caring for the students.
The Senegal Project aims to help this community by contributing to the school's development, both financially and physically. The students will be expected to collect funds and donations prior to the trip to help Les Cajoutiers. The funds collected will directly go into the realisation of one of the school's current projects. The students will be working closely with the pupils of the different sections, organising and leading educational activities. The use of plastic bags being an important environmental issue in Senegal, the students will also work on a project to raise awareness in the local community, empowering the students of the Cajoutiers school to be agents of change.
During the trip, the students will encounter people living with poverty and disability, but they will also discover a different culture and way of life. The Senegal Project aims at pushing our students out of their comfort zone and at challenging their general (and often negative) misconceptions towards 'Black Africa'. Participants will find that behind our fear of the unknown, lies a beautiful country with amazing people, facing adversity with smiles and hope for a better future.
