Harvey Milk was an iconic figure in the LGBTQ+ community who worked throughout his lifetime to “shatter boundaries and challenge assumptions.” He was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977 making him the “first openly gay elected official in California, and one of the first in the United States.”
His fight to be elected to political office broke down barriers for the LGBTQ+ community and helped ensure rights for members of the LGBTQ+ community.
