Born January 11, 1885, Mount Laurel, New Jersey, U.S.—died July 9, 1977
Alice Paul fought for gender equality and women’s suffrage. She broke societal expectations by achieving multiple higher education degrees, including a PhD from the University of Pennsylvania.
Paul led the Washington DC chapter of NAWSA and formed the National Women’s Party, whose sole platform was to attain the 19th amendment to the Constitution guaranteeing women the right to vote. Paul then authored the Equal Rights Amendment in 1923, which has yet to be adopted.
