Arts Electives

Media Studies

Students learn and experience the production process of researching, planning and communicating through visual (photography) and audio/visual (video) mediums. Students examine the art of storytelling using audio/visual digital technology and experiment to find their own voice within a highly creative medium. Students explore and provide visual or audio/visual responses to a range of ideas, themes topics and perspectives.

Note: User pay materials will be used to enhance the curriculum at a cost of $20 for the Semester. An event will be created with the cost, once the subject selection has been completed and parents will receive a notification on COMPASS to complete payment.

Music Performance

This is a practical subject for students who are interested in performing and composing music. Students will further refine both solo and group performance skills and learn about practice techniques, in addition to developing the skills to describe and analyse musical works from various genres and contexts. They will use music technology to assist the development of their aural (listening) skills. Students will participate in master-class style workshops and present a performance at the end of the semester. This class can be taken as preparation for VCE Music Performance or just for fun.

*It is recommended that students who elect to take this subject have one year’s experience playing an instrument/singing.

Songwriting and Music Technologies

This subject will develop skills in songwriting and music technology by requiring students to conceptualise and articulate an original interactive work. Students will develop strategies and gain an understanding of production values in relation to this task. Students will have to collaborate, communicate and organise an ensemble to realise the work. Students will also build an understanding of, and skills, in music software programming and recording.

Theatre Studies

Theatre Studies students in Year 10 explore a range of theatrical conventions and dramatic elements in the creation of small and large group ensembles. This leads to devising their own dramatic production for an audience and taking on production roles such as stage design, direction, lighting, sound, make-up and costume. Assessment is based on participation, performance and set written tasks.

Visual Art

In Year 10 Visual Arts, students expand on their knowledge of artistic practice while exploring how artists manipulate materials, techniques, technologies and processes to develop and express their intentions in artwork. Students are guided to conceptualise, plan and design artworks that express ideas, concepts and artistic intentions in both 2 & 3D mediums (primarily sustainable sculptures, printmaking and painting). It is in Year 10 that students further develop their visual analysis skills to interpret and evaluate a range of visual artworks from different cultures, and historical and contemporary contexts, including artworks by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples to explore differing viewpoints.

Students continue to extend their understanding of safe visual arts practices and choose to use sustainable materials, techniques and technologies.

Visual Communication and Design

This unit incorporates computers and other drawing instruments in the design process, using both conventional drawing processes and creative drawing methods. They use text as a design component and research the appropriate use of typography. They use layout design to change the communication purpose and where applicable draw using the computer to build up our images. Assessment is based on a folio of work, a sketchbook and research projects.
