I can create a weaving using recycled materials.
Watch the story, Just a Dream, by Chris Van Allsburg.
Earth Day is celebrated every April. This year it is on April 22nd. It is a day to focus on protecting our environment for future generations. Our project this week will use repurposed or recycled materials to create art. This project may take you several days- just take your time and enjoy making your art!
Watch this story, Rainbow Weaver.
We will make our own weavings out of plastic bags! You can either turn your weavings into a small rug or into a wall hanging.
You need the following materials:
A piece of stiff cardboard
Scissors (you can tear the pieces if you have no scissors, but it will make it a little more difficult)
Plastic bags (any color- the more the better!)
Use the photo, “Preparing the Loom” to help you make your own loom. A loom is a piece of hard material that holds our yarn (or for us, our plastic bags!) in place for us to weave them.
Once you’ve made your loom, it’s time to start weaving! Use the photo, “Start Your Weaving,” to help you.
If you need help with the process, you can watch the Plastic Bag Weaving video to walk you through the steps of creating your loom and weaving. (The videos will show you how to make a BIG weaving, using BIG cardboard, but you can make yours as large or small as you like. Just use whatever size cardboard you have.)
If you’d like to share your portraits with us, send a picture to your teacher’s email. We’d love to see your art!
