Date: Wednesday 6 February
Duration: 60 min
Description: Distributed ledger technologies (DLTs), like the most well-known, Blockchain, have the potential to transform the global food system by introducing important efficiency gains along value chains, and improving trust, transparency and traceability. While large actors are likely to make fast and significant inroads in exploiting DLTs, small farmers and processors also stand to reap significant benefits, provided the technology is made accessible to them.
This Webinar sought to make an initial contribution to the emerging public debate on this issue by providing an overview of DLTs and their application in food and agriculture, examining public policy implications for food security and rural development, and identifying some potential challenges, risks, and the way forward.
Speakers:
Brian King - Coordinator of the CGIAR Platform for Big Data in Agriculture, based at CIAT: What is Blockchain and what can it do for you? Examples from CGIAR
Mischa Tripoli and Josef Schmidhuber -FAO experts in blockchain and its application in the agri-food industry, gave a short presentation on Emerging opportunities for the application of blockchain in the agri-food industry
Christina Frankopan - partner, Fabric Ventures (and former Bioversity Board member) presented two examples: blockchain-based tools for incentivising research collaboration (eg Open Science Network) and - participating in emerging environmental "protocol standards" for agrobiodversity (eg Regen Network)
This webinar was organized by Bioversity International.
