Description: The CGIAR Big Data Platform has recently released consultation drafts of Responsible Data Guidelines and Key Concepts focusing on handling of personally-identifiable information (PII) in the Research Project Data Lifecycle. This session gave an overview of these resources and an update from USAID regarding comparable guidelines they expect to launch soon. The webinar crowdsourced priority topics for FAQs to complement the Responsible Data Guidelines and socialize a beta version of a ‘CGIAR PII Interest Group’ SharePoint site, set-up to facilitate interaction and knowledge sharing across CGIAR.

Rodrigo Sara provided an overview of the Responsible Data Guidelines and related tools/resources, including the ‘CGIAR PII Interest Group’ SharePoint site set-up to facilitate interaction and knowledge sharing across CGIAR related to handling PII in the Research Project Data Lifecycle. Rodrigo Sara is an IP Lawyer with extensive experience supporting CGIAR research and scaling. He has been engaged by the CGIAR Big Data Platform to develop practical resources to support PII handling in CGIAR Research.
Rebecca Saxton-Fox provided an update on USAID’s Guidelines and complimentary resources addressing PII, which are anticipated to be published late 2018 or early 2019. She provided a high-level summary of the resources, what they are intended to achieve, lessons learned in their development, and relevance to CGIAR. Rebecca Saxton-Fox is an ICT Policy Advisor at the U.S. Global Development Lab at USAID. She works on advancing the appropriate use of data and digital technologies in USAID programs. Rebecca has worked in international development for over a decade; she has also worked for the UN and NGOs in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.
Open Discussion: Participants were invited to share their experiences/challenges concerning PII handling, and to crowdsource priority topics for FAQs to be developed to complement the Guidelines.
