Letters of Recommendation

The 4 R's for Letters of Recommendation

STEP 1: RESEARCH

Search each college’s website for Admission Requirements.

Do they require letters of recommendation?

STEP 2: REQUEST

Ask your recommender if they’re willing to write you a letter and

whether they require a Student Profile (or similar document).

STEP 3: RESPOND

Provide your recommender with their requested information as well as instructions on how to submit on your behalf.

If the letter needs to be mailed, please provide your recommender with an addressed envelope & stamp.

Staff members need at least 3 weeks to complete your letters.

STEP 4: REVIEW

BEFORE THE DEADLINE, follow-up to ensure your recommender submitted your letter.

Write a thank you note to your recommender!

IMPORTANT: Check your college portals and emails for notifications of missing information. DO NOT IGNORE THESE EMAILS. If your letters of recommendation are missing, please follow up until it is marked “complete”.

For Teachers:

Remember, a letter that demonstrates what is unique to your student carries more weight than a beautifully written letter that could be about anyone. Use anecdotes that will show the reader of your letter why this student is a worthwhile investment.
