Why is it important to understand the cognition behind learning?
Many teachers approach teaching without considering why students learn the way they do. It’s important to understand, as an educator, what is going on inside students’ minds when they are being taught in the classroom. "Learning That Sticks" refers to this concept as the “black box” of students’ minds, and emphasizes the need to look inside that box and figure out how the brain interprets, stores, retrieves, and applies information (Goodwin, Gibson, & Rouleau, 2020, p. viii). The authors draw upon cognitive psychology to propose a six-phase model of learning.
