Joellynn Dwinal "Loud Thunder"
9x14, oil pastel, 2025
My idea was to create a drawing of a picture I took when me and my family were walking on a trail at the loud thunder campground. I wanted to make my drawing textured and colorful so I used oil pastels.
For my process I sketched out where I wanted the parts of the drawing at with a pencil. Then I used many different colors of oil pastels to make the photo how I wanted it. To get all of the different colors, instead of drawing with the oil I pressed in a bunch of dots to create texture.
I want my audience to see the texture in my drawing and want to touch it, there was a lot of work into making it look the way it does and i want them to know it was hard. My art symbolizes that not every drawing has to be perfect, it can be messy.
It was most difficult for me to make all of the colors blend well together, and it was difficult to make the bridge look how I wanted it to look. If I were to start over I would choose brighter colors and I would fix the stems on the flowers.
I love that my drawing is very colorful, and its not perfect and it is sort of messy, it resembles that not everything has to be perfect and its okay if you draw outside the lines.
Joellynn Dwinal "Reaching into space"
12x15, mixed media, 2025
My idea was to create a collage of space because I think it would look really cool in a collage and I knew that I wanted to use some type of person in it so I could use it as a portrait.
For my process cut out a bunch of stuff from magazines that I may have wanted to use. I then had Mrs. Garrity print out pictures I found on pintrest for me to use. I then glued all of the pictures I decided to use onto the paper. Once the glue dried I went int with a white gel pen and created a bunch of space doodles. Once I was done with the I went in with mod podge and sealed all of it.
I want my audience to notice that the boy in the collage is holding up the moon, as if he is holding it up for earth. I want people to think that this drawing is fun.
It was most difficult for me to decide what I wanted to do for this project because I had so many ideas but a lot of them were not going to work out how I wanted them too.
I love that my Collage is so random yet everything has the same theme.
Joellynn Dwinal "Charlie"
9x14, Graphite, 2025
My idea was to create a drawing of my brothers dog Charlie so that when my brothers girlfriend has her baby they can hang the photo up in the nursery. I wanted to make a realistic drawing of him in black and white.
For my process I put a grid onto my piece of paper and then I began to sketch out his shape. Once I was done with his shape I began to use graphite to shade in all of the dark areas. Then, I went in a did all of the shading with different kinds of pencils. After the shading was done I went in with think and thick erasers and I erased small details into the drawing to make it look more realistic. Once that was done I used a white gel pen to color in the lightest parts.
I want my audience to see the messiness of the drawing, I think that the smudged graphite adds to the feel of my art.
It was most difficult for me to shade in and erase the drawing because it was a long process of back and forth. It was also difficult to keep the graphite from smudging into the other parts of my drawing.
I love that my drawing is very realistic, it looks like the photo if the photo were to be in black and white. This drawing is special to me because I put so much effort into making it look real.
