12½x5x10½ , glaze, stoneware

My idea was to create a bust that was different and that had an open head. I got the idea from a drawing i did where it was an open head man that had flowers coming out the top of it. It evolved from that to being a bust that had flowers on the outside of the bust. And on the inside, it has a hole because it is going to be turned into a planter. First i took 2 pop cans and 1 pop bottle to make a base to start building my bust. I used chunks of clay to make coils and every time i laid a coil i would smooth it out so it would be easier to smooth it out when i was done. I covered the whole base, which is the bottles taped together, in coils. After i had the base covered i began to build the head. It was a process to figure out if the placement was right and if the chin or face was large enough. After i had enough head to work with i added a mouth and nose to the face. After those were added i cut along the top to make the wavy shape of it. I then went around the whole piece and made sure everything was smooth and thet there were no bumps, scrapes, or anything. It was then dried out for 10 days, and then fired in the kiln. When it got out of the kiln i sanded it down to be smooth and began glazing everything with a base color even the inside on the bottom. To make the vines i first started drawing them put until i got the desired look and then glazed the vine a green color. I then put down marks for where i wanted to put the petals or flowers. I used four different colors of glaze for the flowers i used red, blue, purple, and a pink color that turned out a light red. I then did a couple of coats of those and i changed the pattern i put the colors on every time i ended a vine. I colored the inside of the head a black color but i accidentally got some other glaze in there so it turned a dark greenish color. It was fired in the kiln for the last time. When people look at my piece i want them to think of gardens and beauty. The most difficult part was building the head of the piece. I overcame the struggle by just triL and error and trying to figure out how i wanted to do it. If i could change anything i think i would change the lips and make them look a little better. It is unique to my style because all of my pieces are different and are not the same. I love everything about my piece.

My idea was to make a simple pot that had a different color inside than the outside. It evolved from a simple round pot to a pot that had a more defined curvature. There was no inspiration besides just wanting it to be different. First, i took a decent-sized ball of clay and rolled it out into about a ½ inch thick slab. I then took it to the slab roller, making the clay be in a more level slab. I took a lid that was the size circle i wanted for the base of my piece. I used the rest of my slab to cut a long rectangle shape that would become the body of my piece. I took the piece and i scored the bottom of the rectangle and on the circle where it would sit, i then used slip to put it on the slab. I evened out the top of the piece to make it level, to make the wavy part i just pinched the outside until i got the desired look. I took a small coil and added it to the bottom to make a foot. It was then fired in the kiln after it got out i sanded it so it was smooth and so there were no sharp edges. I glazed it, on the inside i used seaweed green and i originally had the outside green but it came out differently than i wanted it to. So after it came out of the kiln for the second time i re-glazed it to make it more different on the outside, i glazed it with black but it turned out different. And on the bottom, i glazed it a blue color. I personally do not think there is any symbolic imagery to this piece. If the audience wants to take seeing the different colors sometimes it's different on the inside than the outside. The most challenging thing was getting the body to blend seamlessly to the base so it was all connected. I solved it over time by just working on making it smooth and blended. It is a non-objective piece of work. It is unique to my style because i dont like to make things simple and bland.
