"Rectangle Box"

4*2¾*2¼, Glaze and Stonewear

My first idea wasnt actually to make a rectangle box i wanted to make a coil pot. I couldnt figure out how i wanted it to be so i changed it to a rectangle box with a lid. I wanted to add legs to it that were balls but they werent working out so i didnt use them. I rolled out a big slab of clay till i got my desired thickness, I cut out about 6 small rectangles to form the box and lid. I didnt think about adding a print or design to it i just wanted it to be a basic rectangle box. I then formed all the walls and began to form the box. I made the lids with just a slab of clay. To make the lip on the lid i used some left over pieces of clay and tried to form a rectangle shape with those so the lid wouldnt slide around, one of the pieces did fall off. I dont really see any symbolism in the artwork so when people look at my artwork they can think what they want. The most difficult thing was probably trying to figure out how to build my baseline project and how to go about it. I fixed it by just picking something and just going for it. If i could start over i would probably to go with my original idea of a coil pot What i love is how on the inside i did a different colored glaze and it turned out beautiful.

"Dip Bowl"

5*4½* 2, Glaze and Stoneware

My idea was to make a bowl that could hold salsa. I first thought just a normal bowl would be good but i changed it from that to a bowl that's a little deeper and a bowl where the edges are ruffled a bit. I rolled a medium-sized slab of clay and used a roller that had vines and leaves print on it. I took the slab and draped it over a small styrofoam circle and i cut off the extra clay that overhung off the edge. Once i took the extra off i smoothed the edges and pinched them a little bit to get the ruffled look. I left it on the circle for it to dry and keep the shape of the bowl. The bowl got fired in the kiln and when it got out i used sandpaper to sand the project. I used a spotted green color for the inside of the bowl, on the outside of the bowl i used a deep shade of green. It was fired in the kiln after receiving 3 coats of glaze. When i look at my bowl and the design on it i think of Tinkerbell because of how the vines look. When people look at my piece i would like them to think of something earthy or they could think of Tinkerbell but it depends on how people want to look at it. The most difficult thing for me was trying to get the print to stay in the clay and for it to not overlap. I fixed that by carefully rolling the thing across the clay and in some parts i pressed the roller into the spots that weren't working out. What i love about my piece is how the detail turned out.

"Green Chip Bowl"

11*10½*1½, Glass, and Stoneware

I wanted it to kind of match my dip bowl, i wanted them to be a semi-matching set.  I got the idea just from looking at my dip bowl and how good it looked. My process was i first rolled a slab of clay that was gonna be slightly bigger than the mold i used. I took a piece of lace and a rolling pin and rolled the lace texture onto the slab. I took the slap and put it on the mold, I cut off the extra clay that hung over the edge. my clay was really soft at this time so when it went to dry it had to be left on the mold till it was dry enough. When it was dried enough which is about ten days of drying time it gets fired in the kiln. When it was out of the kiln i picked a glaze that was similar in color to my dip bowl, i didn't want the exact same color so i picked one that was different. I did about 5 coats of that glaze because it was such a thin glaze texture that i had to do extra coats so it would be good, then it was fired in the kiln for the last time. I don't really see and symbolic imagery in this artwork but when people look at it they can think what they want. This green one wasn't my first chip bowl my other one i made had a crack in it, i thought i could fix it by just glazing over it. But the crack was deeper and when it was fired with the glaze on it cracked and sort of separated. I solved that by just making a completely new piece. What ti would change is probably the detail on the green one or the color of the glaze i think i could have tried a new glaze color. In my piece, i love that it sort of matches all my other artwork, the sort of plant and earthy.

"Gnome House"

5’½*7*7, stoneware and glaze

My idea was to create a cookie jar that would look like a mushroom. I got the idea from looking at the red top mushrooms, it evolved from that idea because i had watched the smurfs movie and i thought that i wanted to make it look more like a house than just a normal mushroom. First, i had sketched the idea of the mushroom house. I then begin to roll out slabs of clay to form the circle of the base of the cookie jar. I then rolled a few more slabs of clay to make the body of the cookie jar. That was quite hard to form the shape it is now because my clay had gotten a little hard so it was hard to form that without it cracking. I made all the details you see on the body, the hard part of that was to try to form the perfect shape of the door and window because i wanted it to look perfect. I then had to start forming the lid of the jar, i used a foam ball and a bowl to help form it. When i put it on my jar it didnt have the shape i wanted it to have so i balled up newspapers to give the lid the shape, i also cut out the circles and placed them randomly on the lid. The house was left to sit for a few days so it could be fired in the kiln. After it was fired in the kiln i began to start glazing the house. On the windows and door i had to use a tiny brush to get in the little crevices. It was then fired in the kiln again to finish the process. When people look at my artwork i want them to think about something enchanting and magical. I want them to think this because when i look at it i think of gnomes and fairies. What was the most difficult for me was trying to shape the body of the mushroom house because the slab i originally cut for the body was too small and it was dry so it kept cracking. I solved the first problem by filling the empty spot with pieces of clay so that the sides would connect. I solved the other one by wrapping it with wet paper towels and just being patient with it so it wouldnt completly fall apart. What i love about my artwork is how it turned out. I didnt think it would turn out that good, i like how all the glazes turned out they all worked perfectly.

"Rose"

3*3*6, Glaze and stoneware

When i started i didn't really have an idea i just started to mess with clay until i got some sort of idea. I started making a rose and then it evolved into the open vase. First, i started to make the rose by taking pieces of clay and sort of molding them together to get the rose look. At first, i couldn't quite figure out how to make the rose so i sort of just mashed pieces together but then i got help from my teacher who helped figure out the shape and look of the rose. I added quite a few petals by scoring and using slip to keep them together i also smoothed the outer petals so they didn't look rough. I then look a medium-sized piece of clay and rolled it out, i cut out a small circle for the base. I re-rolled the piece of clay so it would get a good shape. I scored the edge that would be on the base and i scored the base where the body would be and i didn't really make changes to that piece. I just kind of left the body blank. Then when i had the rose top on the body i added a vine that kind of twirled around the body. I then cut out leaves and etched the leaf print on them. I then made lite thorns. But when they got fired in the kiln they broke off. After it got fired in the kiln i glazed it with around 3 different colors a red and 2 different greens. Then got fired in the kiln one last time. When people look at my artwork i want them to think of beauty or a rose. Because when i see a rose i see beauty and elegance in them. Or people can think about beauty and the beast and the enchanted rose. The most difficult part was building the rose. I struggled with trying to layer them to look like a rose i had started with them just looking like a mess then i got help and made it look better. I would change the body to make it more narrow almost like a stem of a flower. What i love about this is how the color turned out on the rose i like how on some parts the glaze is a little lighter.
