There are various ways to submit college applications; through the institution, through the common application, or through the coaltion applicaiton. Applications require various components so make sure you are looking closely at what your application requires!
The Common App is an online application portal used to apply to multiple schools at the same time. Over 400 schools use the Common App. If you are applying to more than one of those schools, one application can be created and it will be submitted to each of the schools you indicate. Once you select the schools you wish to apply to using the Common Application, you will be able to complete the Supplemental Information section for each college. The application itself -including student information, personal statement, and extracurricular activities -will be sent to ALL colleges listed. Some colleges will require additional essays and information, but the personal statement essay will be seen by each college; therefore, make sure that you are very careful not to write about a topic (or a specific school) that you do not wish for the other schools to see.
Check out this graphic where you can find all of the schools that use the common app in Virginia!
The COALITION APP is a free platform adopted by a growing number of colleges and universities. The application promotes a portfolio-based application, which students are able to build upon at the start of their freshman year. A few schools in Virginia have adopted the Coalition App including: CNU, William and Mary, JMU, Richmond, Sweet Briar, and VT. This application is not replacing the Common App but has provided another means to apply to these institutions.

A resume and coverletter should be used to convey your previous education, work experience, skills, and certifications. Here are some tips for when you are constructing a resume:
If you don’t have work experience talk about leadership experience.
If you are a caregiverfor someone in yourfamily that can be included on the resume.
Describe a position to the best of your ability.
Make sure punctuation, font size, italics, bolding, etc. are consistent throughout yourresume.
When you describe your skill, position, coursework, etc. make sure you start with an action verb. All action verbs should be past tense.
A great application essay will present a vivid, personal, and compelling view of you to the admissions staff. It will round out the rest of your application and help you stand out from the other applicants.
The EVHS Writing Center will host college essay workshops in the fall! Join the EVHS Google Classroom! Talk to Mrs. Kauffman, Mr. Parr, or Mr. Ernst for more information!
Bring something new to the table. Colleges want a piece of writing that is unique. Think of this as an opportunity to show them your personality and style.
Don’t include information that is found elsewhere in the application. Your essay will end up sounding like an autobiography, travelogue, orlaundry list. Yawn.
Eliminate unnecessary words. Use everyday language- you shouldn’t abuse the thesaurus!
Enouff sayd.
The application essay is your chance to talk about what makes you special—enjoy it!
