SORENSEN INSTITUTE FOR POLITICAL LEADERSHIP- High School Leaders Program

  • The Sorensen Institute's High School Leaders Program (HSLP) offers concentrated study in Virginia politics and government for high school students from across the state. The HSLP is based on a firm belief that young people not only can make a positive difference in their communities, they should be strongly encouraged to do so.

Duke for A Day

  • The Duke for a Day Program allows prospective students to shadow a Student Ambassador during their daily activities. Includes a 30-minute info session in the morning, meeting their Duke for lunch, and then attending a class.

Old Dominion University

GenCyber Program

  • GenCyber is a nation-wide grant program funded by the National Security Agency (NSA) and the National Science Foundation (NSF). The GenCyber program provides summer cybersecurity camp experiences for students and teachers at the K-12 level.

Virginia Tech

Black College Institute

  • Offers a three-day sessions twice during the summer of 2021: June 13 -June 16 and June 20- June 23. Black College Institute (for rising juniors) will offer a three-day session for the summer of 2021: June 27 - June 30. All programs are FREE of cost to students!

Pathways for Future Engineers

  • Pathways for Future Engineers is a multi-year Virginia Tech College of Engineering program designed to support first generation students and their families on the pathway from high school to an engineering degree. The program includes pre-college activities (while students are still in high school) as well as additional support as students pursue their undergraduate degree.

Women’s Preview Weekend

  • Women’s Preview Weekend (WPW) provides an opportunity for young women who have been offered admission to the College of Engineering to visit the campus and make an informed decision about attending Virginia Tech. During Preview Weekend, students meet current students and faculty and get a first-hand look at Virginia Tech and the College of Engineering.

C-Tech² - Computers and Technology at Virginia Tech

  • C-Tech² offers an opportunity to learn about college life--from residence halls to classrooms and everything in-between. It provides access to information and technology necessary to best prepare you for your future. The C-Tech² program targets rising junior and senior high school girls.

Building Leaders for Advancing Science and Technology (BLAST)

  • Building Leaders for Advancing Science and Technology offers an exciting way for rising 9th and 10th grade students to spend three days of summer! Participating students get to stay in a college dorm and see what campus life is like on-site at one of our three partner universities: Old Dominion University, Virginia Tech, or the University of Virginia. Each day of BLAST is jam-packed with science, technology, engineering, and math-related (STEM) activities and demonstrations led by faculty of the university. Students come away from BLAST with a greater sense of curiosity, deeper insight about the variety of careers that exist in STEM, and enhanced readiness for advanced STEM programs.

TechGirls

  • Since 2012, TechGirls trained and mentored 162 teenage girls (ages 15-17) from Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestinian Territories, Tunisia, and Yemen. The core of the program is a three week experience in the United States. TechGirls participate in an interactive technology and computer camp, join a tech company for a day of job shadowing, and participate in community service initiatives.

  • TechGirls is packed with skill-development workshops and interactions with America’s most innovative tech professionals as well as 45 hours of study at a Tech Camp. The TechGirls program improves the participants’ ability to enter tech fields and gain access to higher education, as well as offering them a rich cultural immersion experience. There is a TechGirls multiplier effect – inspiring others in their local community to pursue Stem.

Galipatia Outreach

  • The students in the Galipatia community, a living learning community for over 500 engineering students at VT, have formed an Outreach Committee that is prepared to travel to local elementary, middle, and high schools to lead hands-on engineering and science activities. Last year the team focused on elementary schools and worked with over 900 students in the Montgomery County School District. They are geared up and ready to expand their efforts this year to middle and high school students as well.

THINKABIT LABS @ VIRGINIA TECH

  • The Thinkabit Lab experience aims to inspire and show students from all cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds that they can become the next generation of inventors. The program is recognized nationally and internationally as a model for exposing students to STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) concepts. Designed for K-12 students, the Thinkabit Lab offers an engaging environment—part lab, makerspace, and learning classroom—to foster creativity, collaboration and the critical skills necessary for the future technical workforce.

DEBATE: GEORGE MASON DEBATE INSTITUTE

  • Age(s): 6th through 12th graders

  • The George Mason Debate Institute strives to offer the most individual attention of any debate camp. Low student-to-faculty ratios and an extremely active faculty allow us to meet the individual needs of every debater. We are proud of our ability to tailor our instruction to the needs of individual participants once assessments are done; tailored instruction is indeed a unique institute approach. The camp has a focus on debate as an educational and communicative activity, which offers a one-of-a-kind learning experience. As part of our unique educational approach, participants will get to hear from topic experts on important public policy issues. Our guest speaker series is certainly the most unique feature of our camp.

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE/CONSERVATION: WASHINGTON YOUTH SUMMIT ON THE ENVIRONMENT (WYSE)

  • The WYSE Virtual Experience is an interactive online conference designed to provide students with an enriching experience through distance learning. The program offers students a community space to explore content, engage with environmental experts, and collaborate with other students to increase their understanding of environmental topics while earning college credit.

GAME DESIGN, PROGRAMMING, AND TECHNOLOGY: MASON GAME & TECHNOLOGY ACADEMY (MGTA)

  • Ages: 9–18

  • MGTA offers age-appropriate STEM classes for ages 9–18 with personalized instruction. Topics include: Game Design and Game Programming with Unity and C#, Art Modeling & Animation, Python and Machine Learning/AI, and Roblox Game Development.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AND ENGINEERING: STEM SUMMER CAMPS

  • Don't take a summer vacation from learning. Our STEM Program offers classes to keep you interested in your favorite STEM topic or learn about a new one. Join your friends and explore web development, physics, cybersecurity, engineering, and more.

JOURNALISM: WASHINGTON JOURNALISM AND MEDIA CONFERENCE (WJMC)

  • The WJMC Virtual Experience is an interactive online conference designed to provide students with an enriching experience through distance learning. The program offers students a community space to explore content, engage with journalism and media experts, and collaborate with other students to increase their understanding of journalism topics while earning college credit.

MATH AND TECHNOLOGY: MATHEMATICS AND TECHNOLOGY FOR TALENTED YOUTH

  • Ages: 6–17

  • Free, online program. Basic Algebra 1, Basic Algebra 2, and Basic Calculus AB.

SCIENCE: ASPIRING INVENTORS' CLUB

  • Actively learn the patent process as you work in small teams to invent and prototype a solution to a challenge, problem, or your own idea! By the club’s end, students can complete a draft of a patent application for their invention. Open to rising 10th graders through college undergraduates.

SCIENCE: INTRODUCTION TO HANDS-ON DATA SCIENCE USING R

  • This course explores the fundamentals of data science with hands-on applications. Students delve into the skills required of college courses and job applications. Activities are structured to understanding data structures, visualization techniques, data mining, and communication of the results. A majority of the course will be dedicated to applying learned skills through various activities. Some programming experience preferred.

SCIENCE: USING BIOINFORMATICS TO INVESTIGATE CURRENT AND FUTURE GLOBAL CHALLENGES

  • This course introduces students to the basic bioinformatics tools commonly used in conservation genetics, population genetics, and phylogenetics with application to very diverse fields (e.g., to study the spread of the different covid-19 strains). Learn how to organize, analyze and interpret existing data. This course is open to high school students who successfully completed first year biology or equivalent as well as undergraduate students and adult learners.
