Attending a community college before transferring to a four-year college is a cost-effective option for students. It offers students the opportunity to earn college credit, a certificate, or an associate’s degree before continuing their education to get their bachelor’s degree. There are two possible routes to take: transferring before you earn your certificate or associate’s degree, or transferring after earning your certificate or associate’s degree.
Guaranteed admissions is a program for students to enter into a four-year school directly from community college. Over 30 colleges across Virginia are part of the agreement.
Students in any community college across Virginia will need to obtain 6o credits of classes and maintain a certain GPA while earning their associate’s degree.
If you do choose to transfer to a four-year college, the level of community college that you complete will determine what the four-year college will look at. If you complete an associate’s degree, then the four-year school is most likely to look only at your community college grades and testing.
It is important to do well while in community college, and while your high school grades do not carry as much weight as your college grades, they are still considered if you apply before earning your certificate or associate’s degree.
NO! The GPA requirement for each school varies, so check with your academic adviser at the community college that you attend. Agreements and terms of guaranteed admissions can be found at https://www.vccs.edu/transfer-programs/, but we advise staying in contact with your academic adviser at your community college in order to ensure that you are up-to-date and on-track to take advantage of this opportunity.
