In My sophomore digital foundations class we recently did a photography project where we got to chose our own subject to shoot. I decided to do a project where I took pictures of all Teachers and school Staff members. I wanted these photos to represent who they are and their personality. I wanted to capture the essence of them in one photo. I encouraged them to use things they feel best represents them. Above are three examples of the project and each one of the pictures has a prop that has something to do with their procession, passions, or things they like to do.
When doing this project I had to use lights and cameras as well as a backdrop to create an ideal picture. I used both Black and white backdrops behind the subjects and I used one strobe light with a soft box on it as well as a hair light with a grid attached. As my camera choice I used a canon 70D. I used both wide angle and zoom lenses depending on the shot I was taking and I used a vertical camera angle in most of the pictures. I worked in a group with two other students and we reached to the teachers through email to figure out s scheduling. We worked before, during, and after school almost everyday to take as many pictures as we could before the deadline.
Above I have three of the final pictures. There are several but I chose to focus on these three because they are very unique. On the top left, my chemistry teacher Mr. Holtz is including chemistry into this photo. I thought it would represent him well because he shows his enthusiastic personality as well as incorporating that to his profession and what he does in the classroom. Next to That There is M. James who is commonly known for eating peanut butter and Honey sandwich. This is something that he likes a lot and what he feels represent him so he incorporated what he likes to eat as well as his happy personality into the photo. The last photo on the right is of Mr. Villages. Mr. Villages is very passionate about fitness and exercise in general. He loves to ride his bike and will often ride to and from school. I wanted to do shot that would look similar to ones with cyclists so I had him hold his bike over is shoulder to model how some cyclists get their photos taken.
Overall I think I definitely reached my goals with what I wanted with these . Each of these captures exactly what I wanted from each photo and I think the teachers would say the same. I think it is awesome way to represent our teachers and it shows the more personal side of them and how it connects to their teaching.
