Sport creates heroes and legends and has been at the heart of communities and civilisations dating back to the Ancient Greeks. Sport and physical activity impacts every aspect of our lives, whether it is playing football or rugby at your local sports club, or scaling one of the world's highest peaks. It also creates the "Where were you?" moments, such as when England won the World Cup in 1966, or Jessica Ennis, Mo Farah and Greg Rutherford winning Olympic Gold on "Super Saturday" in London 2012.
Studying sport ignites passion and builds character by developing resilience, confidence, and teamwork. It will develop a lifelong interest in sport and physical activity, and provides students with the knowledge required to make informed life choices. Students gain an insight into the importance of physical fitness and how physical activity can strengthen an individual psychologically. Learning about champions, what makes them the athletes they are and how they develop, will, we hope, create Great Britain's next set of legends.
Through the teacher led approach, to develop an understanding and be able to perform a range of skills and techniques in range of sporting activities. Students are taught technical development combination of games (e.g rugby, footballl, netball), striking and fielding (e.g. rounders and cricket), swimming, net games (e.g badminton, table tennis);athletic based activities, artistic movements (e.g. gymnasticsa and dance) and outdoor adventure activities through drop everything and play weeks.
Through a combination of Teaching Games Through Understand approach, develop strategies and tactics that can outwit an opponent in a range of sporting activities. Students are taught tactical knowledge combination of games (e.g rugby, football, netball), striking and fielding (e.g. rounders and cricket), swimming, net games (e.g badminton, table tennis);athletic based activities, artistic movements (e.g. gymnastics and dance) and outdoor adventure activities through drop everything and play weeks.
Through the Sport Education Model perfect the use skills, techniques and tactics by being able to analyse and evaluate own performance and that of an individual and team. Students will undertaken a range of practical activities including team games, athletics, gymnastics, swimming and net games, in the role of performer, leader and official and evaluate their own performance, considering ways in which they can improve.
Students will undertake one of two optional units. The first, assesses the different forms of media that are involved in sport, considering the positive and negative influences that the media can have on the growth and development of selected sports. The second, is an outdoor adventurous activity unit, which requires students to have understanding of the provision, equipment and safety requirements needed to undertake three exam board designated activities.
Students will also perform in a range of practical sports, perfecting the use of skills and tactics. Students will select a sporting activity to plan a sporting session, which they will lead to a group of their peers.
Students will look to continue to refine sporting techniques in two chosen sporting activities. Students will analyse and evaluate their own sporting abilities in a chosen activity, creating a development programme to plan and improve their performance. Students will also study contemporary issues that exist in modern sport including: modern sporting events, barriers to participation and the role of performance enhancing drugs and technology in sport.
