Have you ever watched the news and wondered about how humanity has got to this point? Have you ever questioned the version of the story that you have seen on news feeds or social media?
History is the perfect subject to allow students to answer these questions. History at CCHS is part of a team of Humanities subjects that gives our students the skills to become confident, questioning people. It helps students to understand their place in the wider world. They learn about the past and at the same time about key British values of democracy, rule of law and individual liberty. It builds skills which allow students to ask questions about the world they live in. Our history teaching intends to inspire love of learning, tolerance and respect for others. We hope to support student’s critical thinking and understanding of different attitudes and beliefs. History helps to create well informed members of a global community.
Explore the past, understand the present to influence the future
Year 7 History intends to establish a common foundation of knowledge and skills. Students will begin their exploration by studying ancient historical wonders of the world and strengthening their skills of historical enquiry.
Then they will move onto a chronological study of British history from the Normans though to the Civil War. Year 7 students then consolidate this chronological knowledge through a local case study of Colchester and how it has changed over time.
Students will improve their understanding of the discipline of history through a focus on sources and interpretations in Year 8.
They will start their journey with an introduction to the concepts of Empire and Slavery. The students progress to an investigation of Industrialisation and it’s impact and in turn examine the 20th century and it’s significance. This allows students to see how Britain's role in the world has changed and leads to the study of decolonisation in the final term.
Students pull together strands of learning from Year 7 and Year 8 to develop an understanding of migration to Britain over time.
Students then move on to study post war Europe in greater depth.
A more thematic approach follows this as students look at how approaches to medicine and human health has changed over time
Students begin to study Edexcel GCSE content consolidating their prior knowledge and studying Medicine through time 1250-present. They will study how key factors have influenced people’s understanding and approach to ill health. A depth study into conditions on the British Western Front completes this unit.
Students will then move on to an examination of Weimar and Nazi Germany 1918-1939. This unit will focus on the students ability to conduct a historical enquiry using sources and interpretations. They will look at the political, social, economic and religious impacts on the Nazis.
Students will complete two units of work in Year 11.
Early Elizabethan England 1558-1588 requires students to be familiar with the social, religious, political and economic changes that make the Tudor period so important.
They will then study Superpower relations and the Cold War 1941-1991. This unit will focus on the students’ ability to determine why an event is important and what the consequences can be. They will study the origins of the Cold War, it’s key events and the reduction of tension.
