At Catasauqua High School, future-ready means that every student graduates prepared to pursue their personal career goals. We want every student to graduate with the skills and knowledge needed to enter the workforce, enlist in the military, obtain hands-on training at a career and technical education, continue their education at a two-year community college, or attend a four-year university AND become productive members of our community.
2, 0.5 credit courses required for graduation to assist students in their Career Development journey
248 Personal Finance (for students in grades: 10-12) 0.50 credit
This half semester course is designed to give students a general idea about budgets, income and wages and borrowing through the lens of a personal financial statement. The focus of this course is to help students understand how to budget, how to obtain and manage credit, learn about buying a car and identity theft. By learning these concepts students should be better equipped to enter college or the labor force.
350 Career Skills (for students in grade: 11) 0.50 credit
This course will assist our students to develop skills to successfully apply for business/technical/trade schools, post-secondary schools, and/or a job. Career research, resume writing, interviewing techniques, and time management skills will be developed. Students will utilize the Smart Futures program and develop a Career Portfolio. The students will also evaluate their interests, abilities, and skills as they relate to their prospective career path.
Job Shadows, Internships, Externships, Pre-apprenticeships, and Service Learning... oh my!
During your Junior year, you are required to complete a job shadow in Career Skills. As career training (and college) become more extensive and expensive it is increasingly important to make sound career and educational decisions. A job shadow is an excused day from school where you observe and interview someone who works in a career field you find interesting. You will also create a resume, participate in a mock interview, and learn the basics of financial literacy.
Industry Recognized Credentials
While exploring career options, every student at CHS is strongly encouraged to complete an industry-recognized credentials (IRC) before graduation. Earning an IRC will contribute to the ACT 158 Evidence-based Pathway.
We redesigned the traditional Student of the Semester program to recognize not only our top academic performers, but the students who demonstrate essential employability skills for success. Our teachers nominate students that demonstrate a strong work ethic and at least one of the eight skills we adopted from the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE).
Smart Futures is an online program endorsed by the State of Pennsylvania to satisfy the Career, Education, and Work Standards. It provides valuable knowledge and activities to help you become future-ready. This program is accessed through the single sign-in application, Clever.
During 9-11th grade, you will complete activities in the Smart Futures program and complete annual reflections to be used in the course selection process.
During your senior year, you will complete a graduation presentation and exit interview. Your presentation will address how Catasauqua has prepared you for your future and your post-secondary plans. Teacher advisors will ask you questions about your experiences at CHS and about your plans for after graduation.
Hosted in cooperation with Whitehall High School and supported by the local Rotary Club, The Career Expo is a valuable instrument used to expose our students to the many possible career options that are available to them in the future and to emphasize the link between the skills, base knowledge, and critical thinking of their present academic coursework to these career pathways.
All students at CHS will complete a culminating capstone career project and exit interview that addresses how Catasauqua High School has prepared them life after high school. Students will work on this project during the Advisory program and present information on our 3 pillars of career education. Click here to learn more about the project.
It is the mission of the Catasauqua Area School District, in partnership with our community, to achieve educational excellence and promote lifelong learning. We aim to bridge the gap between education and the workforce by partnering with local businesses and individuals to develop career-ready graduates.
As career training and college become more extensive and expensive, the importance of good educational decision-making rises as well. High school is now the starting point for specialized career training and college classes. To prepare our students for a successful transition into a post-secondary institution, the military, or the workforce, we provide a rigorous curriculum and a variety of extracurricular and educational learning opportunities.
Our community partners support our mock interviews, Career Expo, Student of the Semester, Job Shadows, and more!
