What is Verification?
About 30% of all FAFSA filers are selected for the verification process. Verification is intended to improve the accuracy of the information submitted on the FAFSA. During verification, the college financial aid administrator will ask the applicant to supply copies of documentation, such as income tax returns, W-2 statements and 1099 forms, to verify the data that was submitted on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
If your FAFSA is selected for verification after you have been awarded, you have 45 days to complete verification.
There are four options for obtaining a tax RETURN transcript.
You can get your free transcripts immediately online. Your parents do not need a social security number, but they do need a credit card or loan to access it this way.
Go to IRS.gov and use the Get Transcript tool.
You can also get them by phone. You can receive transcripts by mail or by fax (within 5 to 10 days from the time IRS receives your request)
Call 800-908-9946 and follow the prompts.
You can mail the form to the IRS. You can receive transcripts by mail or by fax (within 5 to 10 days from the time IRS receives your request).
Complete Form 4506T and follow the instructions
You can make an appointment and pick it up in person. Call 1-844-545-5640 to set up an appointment at the Hickory Office.
What should I order?
You must order either a tax transcript or a verification of nonfiling
You must order one for you AND either of your parents (if they filed together) or each of your parents (if they filed separately).

If you or your parents did not work and/or did not file taxes you order the verification of nonfiling (check question 7)
The year you order should match the year of your FAFSA (ex 12/31/2017 or 12/31/2018)
