What is the North Carolina Governor’s School?
A five-week summer program for our top students (mid-June to late July) completely paid for by Catawba County Schools.
Governor’s School is focused squarely on students having a unique experience with exploring, growing, and learning. Governor’s School is for passionate leaders. Those who attend Governor’s School come from various backgrounds, ethnicities, experiences, and specialize in different disciplines. You make life-long connections with fellow students as well as faculty and staff.
Students live on campus, have a roommate, and attend mandatory as well as voluntary classes. They get some of that “college experience.” There are no tests or grades, just learning. The emphasis is on CONTEMPORARY thought. Students are encouraged to “question everything” and emphasize cutting-edge ideas and approaches in their fields.
Voluntary opportunities include: seminars, electives, speakers and convocations, concerts, exhibitions, sports, field trips, a semi-formal dance. This gives students an opportunity to “dabble” in other content areas.
How do I apply?
In October a counselor will send out an email asking students to ask a teacher to nominate you. Once you are nominated, you will receive an email with instructions on how to apply. To be eligible, you must:
Be a resident of NC (does not have to be a US citizen)
Be an 11th grader (or 10th grader if nominated for Visual or Performing Arts)
92nd percentile on qualifying achievement tests (Counselors will verify)
