Throughout the academic term, Room 8 has learnt about multiple groups of people who, at times throughout history, have not had their voices heard or dominated by stronger powers. We learnt about the different perspectives and bias of certain groups of people.
Some of the topics we covered in class were:
The Dawn Raids between the Polynesian people and the New Zealand Government and Police.
What it is like to live in North Korea, under their leader Kim Jong Un and his regime.
Woman's Fight to Vote, in New Zealand and around the world.
The New Zealand Wars between the Māori and British.
The racial inequality in the USA.
The Springbok Tour.
Below students have created a two voice poem from the perspectives of these hidden voices, compared to the world they have been brought up in. They have also created a Google Drawing to accompany their writing.
Enjoy!

The google drawing I have done is on Kim Jong Un as he is the leader of North Korea. People who left North Korea said that they didn’t know that you were allowed to own a computer or wear jeans. I have found it interesting learning that it is illegal to own a computer or wear jeans, if you are caught you will go to a prison camp where you have a 16 hour work day. One important lesson I have learnt is that to never visit North Korea and to appreciate our privileges.
Brent Belter
My poem represents the hidden voices in the Dawn Raids. The Polynesain Panthers were a group that began 30-40 years ago. I found it sad that the Polynesians got ruthlessly beaten for their skin colour and were blamed for stealing New Zealander’s jobs. I've realised that we should be more grateful for the community that we have to help us in times when we need it.
Riley Brettell
The poem I have written about is about Kim Jong Un and the people in North Korea and how they suffer. I have found it interesting learning that North Korea is so medievil with making them work in labour camps and publicly torturing/killing people who don’t obey Kim Jong Un for such stupid reasons. One important lesson I have learnt is that we can't take stuff for granted like not liking food or your hair because the people in North Korea don't have food and they can only have 12 hairstyles.
Brooklyn Campin
The poem I have written about is the Polynesian Panthers and what they went through. They were a group that formed during the Dawn Raids. I have found it interesting learning about how rude the New Zealand government was to the Polynesians. One important lesson I have learnt is that no matter what, everyone is gonna think of you differently.
Sophie Christensen
This is the poem that I did and my drawing is about the prison and the food in North Korean labour camps. If some of the North Koreans are bad then there family will be in prison with them but the police will have to find the whole family and if the North Koreans tried to escape then they would be shot our go to jail and if they were bad then they would have to do punishments and they might not even get food.
Jessica Curtis
The poem I wrote about is people in North Korea and myself. An interesting thing that I have learnt about is that if you wear jeans you go to jail. One important lesson that I learnt is to be happy and grateful for what you have.
Emily Glavin
My poem is about the difference between people in North Korea and myself. I found it interesting how much they have no control over they life. One important lesson I have learnt is that my life isn't that hard because North Korean people have it harder.
Bailey Groves
The poem I have written about is North Korea compared to myself. I have found it interesting learning that North Korea is very run down and not a place for anyone to live in. One important lesson I have learnt is that the North Korean people get controlled and told what to think by their leader Kim Jong Un.
Axel Hamer
My poem is about the holocaust and the jews not being heared. I realised that we have it so easy compared to the jews in World War 2. So I hope you enjoy my two-sided poem.
Mokai Harris-Paul
The poem I have written about is about the difference between myself and child soilders. I have found it interesting learning that there is kids in growing up in armies compared to kids in schools. One important lesson I have learnt is that it is sad that kids are in the 3 generation camp.
JD Holland
The poem I have written is about a comparison between life in North Korea with the leader Kim Jong-Un compared to my own personal life. I have found it interesting learning that North Korea has many restrictions to the point that they can’t even leave the country and have no freedom at all. One important lesson I have learnt is to not take anything for granted as people in North Korea are struggling to survive.
Ella JAckson
The poem I have written about is how unfair the North Koreans in the Labour Camps are treated compared to how Kim Jong-Un lives. I have found it interesting learning about North Koreans and how they are treated living in North Korea. One important lesson I have learnt is that we should be grateful for what we have because the people that live there have really bad lives and sometimes don’t even have clean water to drink.
Nate Johnston
My poem is about myself compared to a North Korean and what life is like in different parts of the world. I found it interesting that someone can have so much power over someone else which isn’t fair. Learning about hidden voices has taught me to be grateful for what I have and be happy with that because some kids like in North Korea don’t even have a house to sleep, eat and drink in.
Halim Koorey
The poem I have written about is the Dawn Raids, between the Polynesian Panthers and myself. I have found it interesting learning that the dawn raids happened in New Zealand from 1973-1979. They were called overstayers from the islands. One important lesson I have learnt is that it was a bad thing that happened and a lot of people got hurt for having brown skin colour.
Sophia Langton
My poem represents the hidden voices of North Korean people ruled by Kim Jong-Un. I found it interesting that North Koreans have to follow very strict rules. An important lesson I have learnt is that we should enjoy the life we are given even though it may not be the best other people could have worse.
Tavatualau Limuloa
My poem shows the difference between my normal everyday life and the life of a child prisoner in a North Korean Labour camp. I have also learnt that I already have everything I need to live, and more.
Luca Millward
My poem is about a Jewish kid living in the Holocaust compared to my life. I am surprised that people had to live through that horrible time. My lesson I have learned is don't take your good life for granted because it could slip away at any moment.
Shivesh Prakash
The poem I have written represents the perspective of a North Korean in a prison camp compared to my life. I have found it interesting learning that the North Korean citizens are dying because of one man, Kim Jong Un. One important lesson I have learnt is that I should be thankful for everything I have.
Joel Pulley
My poem explains the difference between my life in New Zealand, and a kid's life in North Korea. I created a google drawing of Kim Jong Un because he is the man making North Korean lives miserable lives. I found it interesting that the government in North Korea does the absolute least they can for the citizens. One important lesson I have learnt from creating this is to be grateful for what ever you have, because there are other people around the world that would love to have what you have.
Hamiora Reweti
My poem is about the holocaust and how Hitler single handedly almost killed a whole religion. I have found it interesting learning that during the second world war, NZ sent NZ to the pacific over in fiji. One important lesson I have learnt is that Hitler started the 2nd world war because of the amount of “living space” and he wasn’t happy with the jewish and their beliefs.
Adarsh Rijal
I have written a poem about what it's like to be a child living in a North Korean labour camp compared to my life. I have found it exciting learning that you can go to jail for something that some one who is two generations apart from you in your family die because of the three-generation rule. One important lesson I have learned is that I'm so privileged so I should take nothing for granted.
James Ryan
The poem I have written is about Kim Jong Un and the comparison in life between myself and North Korean children. I have found it interesting learning that children in North Korea have so many restrictions around what they are allowed to do, many of them grow up with little to no food and resources, some even grow up in labour camps. An important lesson I have learnt is that me and many others are taking the life we have for granted, and that we don't appreciate things as much until they're gone.
Grace Thompson
My poem is a North Korean child living in a labour camp verse my own life. I found it really interesting that Kim Jong-Un has so much power over North Korea and how horribly they are treated in their prisons. One important thing I have learnt is how lucky I am compared to a North Korean and to not take my life for granted.
George Wilson
The poem I have written about is my life compared to a kid in North Korea. I have found it interesting learning that you get put in jail just for wearing jeans in North Korea. One important lesson I have learnt is that to appreciate everything that I have.
