Room 5 has been looking at historical events and the different perspectives of those who have been involved.
This term we have been learning across the curriculum about people’s voices who have been left unheard.
In particular, we have learnt about life from the perspective of a citizen living in North Korea, controlled by Kim Jong-Un and his regime.
Following this, we have studied the Holocaust and the actions of the Nazis’, looking at the hidden voices of European Jews during the course of the Second World War.
Finally, we looked at the missing voices in sport. Jackie Robinison was an African American professional baseball player who broke the Major Leagues Baseball infamous “colour barrier” when he played for the Brooklyn Dodgers.
Through various perspectives, Room 5 students have continued to develop their empathy and open-mindedness.
Every student has created a visual representation for their poem. Their two voice poem aims to provide various perpsectives from the same momentous event.
My poem represents the voices of North and South Korea. I found it interesting to learn about Korea, in particular North Korea because of its very interesting history and what is currently happening there. I didn’t know much about Korea and its ruling by Kim Jong-Un.
My poem explains Kim Jong-un and a North Korean citizen's perspective on what life is like in North Korea. I was surprised when I found out the North Korean citizens are actually struggling to survive with what is going on in their world. Something I have learnt from writing this is that we need to be more grateful about what we get, some people in North Korea don’t have a house to live in or clean water to drink.
My poem represents the voices of Yeonmi Park and her conflict with Kim Jong Un. I found it interesting learning about North Korea because information has been hidden from the main world for so long. An important lesson I learnt from these missing voices is to never give up and that you can do anything if you try hard enough.
Both Yeonmi Park and Kim Jong-Un are represented in my poem. Before I started this topic, I assumed that North Korea was a typical country like us, so I found it intriguing to learn about North Korea overall. These missing voices taught me to never give up and to always speak up for what is right.
The poem I have written are the voices of Jews and Hitler. I have found it interesting learning about the horrible conditions and treatment the Jews had to go through because of one man's selfish brainwashing and evilness. One important lesson I have learnt is not to take the amazing life I have for granted because It could all go bad when you least expect it even if you don’t deserve it.
The poem I have written are the voices of a Jew and a Nazi soldier. Through this two voice poem I was able to express the challenges and unfairness not only a Jew would have to go through but also a Nazi soldier who is a part of the crime. Learning about the Holocaust made me understand that even people who were a part of the Nazi’s were tricked into thinking that Jews were the cause of all the problems. It also made me see that we could never understand how much torture and pain the Jews had to go through because of one man. I’m grateful that I am able to live a life with no problems and concerns.
My poem represents the voices of Hitler and a Jew. I found it interesting learning about the Holocaust, especially the Jewish ghettos. I enjoyed researching what life was like inside of them, overcrowding and lots of diseases. An important lesson that I learnt from the hidden voices is that when you are not heard you need to fight for what is right. Even if it means sacrificing something special or yourself for the better.
My poem represents the voices of Hitler and the Jews. I found it interesting learning about the Nazi ghettos, because I didn’t know about them. I also didn’t know that about 6 million Jews that were in the ghettos at some point. An important lesson I learnt from these missing voices was the pain and torture the Jews had to go through under Nazi rule.
My poem represents the voices of Jackie Robinson and Pee Wee Reese. I found it interesting learning about Jackie Robinson and his part in the Major League Baseball, breaking the racial barriers. I was amazed by how much segregation there was in sports. An important lesson I learnt from these missing voices was that I have got a good life and I shouldn't take anything for granted.
My poem represents the voice of Jackie Robinson, and a white baseball player. I found it interesting learning about Jackie Robinson because it proves that if you keep trying something will happen. It was also interesting about the racial segregation. An important lesson I learnt from these missing voices was to never give up.
My poem represents the voice and perspective of Adolf Hitler and a Jewish person. I found it interesting learning about the Holocaust. I didn’t know anything about the ghettos or even that they existed. An important lesson I learnt was that almost anything can happen at any moment so live life to the fullest, take risks, and do things that you love. Life does not last forever.
My poem represents the voices of a Jew on the run and a Nazi soldier hunting them. I found it interesting learning about the Holocaust and the events in WWII, such as how the Nazis treated the Jewish population in the 1940s. An important lesson I learnt was that even though the Jews were being tortured and killed they never gave up hope on escaping and seeing their families again, this is a great example of perseverance.
The poem that I have wrote represents the two voices of a Jew and a Nazi soldier. I found it interesting learning about the Holocaust and the Jewish Ghettos. An important lesson I learnt is to be grateful for what I have and not to take advantage of that.
My poem represents the hidden voices of the North Korean citizens whose country is ruled by Kim Jong-Un. I found it interesting learning about what a normal day in North Korea is like. An important lesson I learnt was to be thankful for what we have here in New Zealand.
My poem represents Hitler and the Jews. I found it interesting learning about Hitler and the Holocaust, the struggles of the Jews and what they had to live through. An important lesson I learnt from these missing voices was not to take anything for granted because it could all change in a blink of an eye. Don't give up when times are tough!
My poem represents the voices of a Jew inside a concentration camp, and Hitler. I found it interesting learning about the things that Nazi’s forced upon the Jews, and how they treated them in concentration camps and ghettos. This was because I had never really recognised the ways that Jewish people were treated. I knew they weren’t treated well, but I didn’t truly know how horrid it was. An important lesson I learnt was that you should take pride in yourself and your freedom.
My poem represents the voices of Hitler and the voice of a Jew inside a concentration camp. Writing the poem was emotional as you had to put a lot of thought into what the Jews would have been feeling to make the piece of writing seem as realistic as possible. I am truly so grateful for the life i have received and that I don't have to go through so much pain and torture every day.
My poem represents the perspectives of a poor Jewish soul living in Germany and Adolf Hitler. I found it interesting learning about the Holocaust and the ghettos that Jews were forced to live in. An important lesson I learnt from these hidden voices was how grateful I am to receive the things I have and how different it can be for others around the world.
My poem represents the voices of Kim Jong-Un and a North Korean citizen. I found it interesting learning about how difficult it is to escape the country and how severe the consequences were if you got caught. An important lesson I learnt is how fortunate I am to live a life without being tortured on a daily basis.
My poem represents the voices of Kim Jong-Un and his brother Kim Jong-Nam. I found it interesting that someone in Kim Jong Nam’s family would order someone to assassinate him. It shows that in North Korea you can’t trust anyone, not even your family. An important lesson I learnt is to make the most of life because you never know when it might end.
My poem represents the voices of a Nazi soldier and a Jew in a concentration camp. I found it interesting learning about the Holocaust and all of the cruel and harsh things the Jews were put through. I was shocked at how evil the soldiers and Hitler were. An important lesson I learnt is how lucky I am to live my life and not have to go through a situation like that.
My poem represents the voice of Kim Jong-Un and a North Korean citizen. I found it interesting studying about North Korea because there are so many things I don’t know about yet there are so many things I found about how different it is from a first world country with freedom. An important lesson I learnt from this was how some people need to make several sacrifices in order to live their life to the fullest.
My poem represents the voices of a Jew and Hitler. I found it interesting learning about Hitler and his army and I enjoyed learning about the Holocaust. An important lesson I learnt from these hidden voices was that you should be grateful for what you have and not take things for advantage.
My poem represents the voice of Kim Jong-Un and a North Korean citizen. I found it interesting learning about how difficult it would be to escape North Korea. An important lesson I learnt from these missing voices was that people have it harder than other people think and that you should never judge.
My poem represents the voice of Adolf hitler and the Jewish population in the 1940s.
I found it interesting learning about the concentration camps because I have never been brave enough to research them until now. An important lesson I learnt from these missing voices was that some people will not agree with your religion.
My poem represents the voices of the US army and North Korean army. I found my topic particularly interesting. It was fascinating because there were more similarities that these two armies shared that I ever expected. An important lesson I learnt from these missing voices was that even though two different countries have many different rules they are still dangerous, powerful, and in some ways alike.
My poem represents the difference between the views of Kim Jong-Un and an average North Korean citizen. It was quite fascinating learning about life in North Korea as most of the time, the media only tells us about Kim Jong Un and his nukes, instead of telling us about the 25 million people trapped there. The lesson that I learnt from these missing voices is to look beyond what the media shows us as quite often, there are more people behind the scenes that we don’t know about.
My poem represents the voice of a malicious Nazi soldier and a lost runaway Jew in an encounter with each other. I found it interesting learning about World War II’s Holocaust and how Jews were treated in ghettos because it is unbelievable. An important lesson I learnt about missing voices is that you have to look at every single perspective before making your assumption or critiques.
