The timer on my oven chimed a tune to let us know that dinner was finally ready. My dad swiftly put down his glasses and book and hurried around the kitchen island to turn off the timer and help my grandma. My sister, anticipating the meal, quickly set the table and tugged at my arm to help her with the plates and silverware. We ran to lay out the dishes, napkins, and glasses, preparing the table for everyone to eat. Before my grandma could even say, "Dinner's ready," our whole family had gathered around the table. My sister and I were the most excited to try the first lasagna we helped make. We could smell the lasagna from miles away and couldn't wait to dig into my grandma's lasagna.
My Grandma, my sister, and I had a tradition of making lasagna each time we saw each other. My Grandmother comes from an Italian background, and lasagna was her favorite dish to share with us, so it is now my turn to share it with everyone else.

Lasagna is a popular Italian dish that dates back to Ancient Greece and Rome. The first type of pasta to be created was called "laganon," a Greek word from which the name "lasagna" derives. The Romans called this idea "lasanum," meaning cooking pot. However, their version didn't have the tomato sauce or cheese we use today.
In the 16th century, tomatoes came to Europe from the Americas, which changed Italian cooking tremendously. By the 19th century, tomatoes and cheese were added to this famous dish. The classic lasagna recipe with we know today, was given to us from the region of Emilia-Romagna, especially Bologna.
Throughout the years, different variations of Lasagna were created, such as vegetarian and seafood Lasagna. After many years of these changes, we now see lasagna is a well-loved comfort food known for its delicious layers and rich flavors, perfect for a family dinner.

As a beloved dish by many Italians, they will tell you that food is love. To the creators of the dish, there is no better way to show love. There is no greater joy than watching steam rise from a warm dinner while surrounded by friends and family. This quick and easy dish that consumes most of the cook time in the oven allows for that time to be spent with family having good conversations or watching quality television. I remember growing up watching soccer highlights or a feel good movie with my dad and my sister as our stomachs anticipated the chime of the oven to tell us the food was ready. To my Italian family, there is no greater meal to enjoy and pray thankfully for the blessing of Lasagna and food in our home.
More specifically as one mother has shown us lasagna spreads the joy and blessings of God. Lasagna Love was a movement created by a mother where she makes lasagna for those in need around her. This simple dish is a soul food that helps her nourish those in her community and is a staple dish that brings joy to those around. Lauren Chizner, the coordinator for Lasagna Love says, "I think the secret is love, just the being able to help somebody," when talking about her Lasagna according to CBS News.. Even as quick as a 30 minute meal is a large act of kindness to many people. In my home growing up, my Nonna or my Dad never let anyone welcome go hungry- this woman has extended that courtesy to all of her neighbors and shown filial love and joy through this beloved dish.
Although lasagna can be a labor of love and a meticulous job, they serve great rewards in each variation. The particular way to stack the multiple layers of pasta, sauce and cheese, creates a wonderful learning experience for your kids. The best way to create and enjoy this savory dish is to eat with those you love most to reap the greatest reward in enjoying them together. Even if it may not be to teach your own grandchild how to make this meal, it is certainly a worthy activity to do with other loved ones, so enjoy this recipe my Italian family values and hopes your family will too.
