This photo above was taken when Sea World first opened in March 1964. In the photo is my great grandparents and my uncle.
Seaworld's slogan says “ help our guests, and the world, explore the wonders around them, and then inspire them to take action to protect wild animals and wild places,” but do they do more harm than help. Seaworlds marine parks attracts myriads of people around the world, but is the attraction for the right reasons. Both my mom and grandma worked at Sea World. My mom worked for three seasons over the summers while she was in college. This encouraged me to want to research Sea World.
Sea World San Diego first opened on March 21, 1964, first opened by Milt Shedd, Ken Norris, George Millay, and David DeMott. Starting in 1861, the first marine mammals were taken into captivity. Nine beluga whales were captured and put into tanks for viewers to see. In 1930 people came to look at the new dolphins captured at Marine Studios. Employees started training dolphins how to do tricks like jump through hurdles in 1950. In 1972 the marine mammal protection act was passed. A major uproar started against Sea World in 2017 over the death of Tilikum.
There are many of problems with this situation at Sea World, but the integrity of its parks is the most important. The problem is people are dying as a result of this animal abuse. The first problem is the marine mammals lives are being cut short in captivity. On average a dolphin or orca can live up to 50 years in the wild in their natural habitat, however, in captivity at SeaWorld their life span is cut in half. Animals like orcas and dolphins are also susceptible to get diseases in the tanks as they are so small.
The second problem is that the animals Seaworld takes are stolen away from their homes. According to people for the ocean, “In 2011, Sea World stole 10 baby penguins from Antarctica for “research purposes”, and in 2015, they FedEx’d 20 others on a 13–hour journey across America in tiny plastic crates with nothing but ice blocks to stand on.” This is just one of the many instances where animal abuse is prevalent in SeaWorld. Many orca attacks and fatal injures has been recorded a SeaWorld. Back in 1991, Orca Tilikum at SeaWorld killed a trainer at Sealand. Knowing this, SeaWorld bought him and he went on to kill two more people, one during a live show and another a person who snuck into his tank. People are dying as a result of animal abuse. Sea World also still has 5 whales in captivity, Makaio, Trua, Malia, Nalani, and Katina. Killer whale enclosures are way too small. Killer whales are not meant to be held in captivity, self harm. Orcas are no longer being held in captivity after the ones in Seaworld pass away.
Since the movie “Blackfish” uproar about killar whales in captivity have started. But what about the other marine animals. All animals are affected not just Orcas. People for the Ocean said “300 dolphins and whales, and 400 walruses and seals have died on Sea World’s watch. An 18 year old beluga whale named Nanuq got in a fight with another animal under Sea Worlds watch and was left with a broken jaw. A walrus that also happened to be blind died from psychological distress at 18. Two polar bears died in 2017 after stress of being separated.

These are just some of the stats that provide evidence that Sea World exploited their animals. First of all 55 killer whales are held in captivity, from that 22 are captured from the wild and 33 were born into captivity. Orcas have the least amount of whales alive in captivity throughout the world. “There are fewer than 60 orcas alive in captivity worldwide, compared to roughly 300 beluga whales and 3,000 dolphins” says Tove Danovich. Just like mentioned previously animals lives are cut in half in captivity compares to the wild.
