Through generations of Native American tribes the Skinwalker story has been spoken among families. A person becomes a Skinwalker by killing one of their family members and putting the skin of the animal that they want to be around them, which is why they are called “Skinwalkers”.Skinwalkers are creatures that can transform into any animal, read people's minds, control animals at night, summon the dead, and kill. They also travel through Portals to get to different places around the world. It is said that one of these portals is in a canyon in Arizona on the Navajo Native American reservation. In the Native American folklore skinwalkers were blamed for everything bad that happened. Such as bad crops, famines, bad marriages, deaths, and droughts.
When Robert Lamb interviewed a Navajo leader they explained that Skinwalkers “gather in foreboding places to work dark magic against their victims and engage in various taboo rituals of incest, corpse defilement and sibling murder”(Lamb & Bowie). In the folktale you can get rid of a skinwalker using an omen or a bullet dipped in white ash. It is also said that Skinwalkers can only be seen by Native American but everyone can hear them.
The thing that is different about skinwalkers than other folklore creatures is that they “aren’t tragic characters turned lupines against their will, as in horror stories, nor are they some species of evolutionarily-confusing creature, as in cryptid legends. Skinwalkers want to be monsters”(Ocker).

As skinwalkers become a more popular topic many people have said they had encounters with them.In Utah there is a Ranch famously known for its skinwalker encounters. The Skinwalker Ranch is a place in the middle of nowhere Utah in between the Navajo and the Ute Native American tribes. Through the 100s of years these tribes have witnessed skinwalker sightings. There was a family that moved into the Ranch in the 1980s and started to witness the same events. There was a specific time when the father of the family went outside at night and saw something in the tree. It was a big wolf the size of a human, with glowing eyes and a distorted face. The man grabbed a gun and started shooting at the creature. When the father went to the tree in the morning all there was, was the indent of a bullet in the tree, nothing else to be seen.
Another encounter with a skinwalker was in Arizona. There was a trial about a woman being murdered behind a hospital where she worked. The man who was being accused of the murdered stated that it was a Skinwalker and not him. He explained that the woman was a part of the Navajo Native American tribe and was Killed by a skinwalker. The skinwalker apparently killed her by putting a wooden pole through her throat even though there was no evidence it was one.
In European culture Skinwalkers are seen as Werewolves, even though they are from different parts of the world. As social media progresses more and more people hear about skinwalkers so the confusion between werewolves and them are less common. Skinwalkers today are known as just a scary story. People on social media, mostly Tik Tok, share stories that they have heard about them. It is known today that if you say skinwalker out loud they will appear. There is no physical evidence that this is true but people are too scared to try it out.
In 2021 someone on Tik Tok posted a video of a long, skinny, boney looking Wolf that was running around with glowing red eyes and they captioned the post #Skinwalker. As of then the popularity of Skinwalker videos has skyrocketed. Now everyone is telling their stories of the infamous skinwalkers and sharing the hashtag among all social platforms. Now Skinwalkers through the United States are known as a scary joke that is talked about within groups of teens.

A couple weeks ago I was reminded of the skinwalker story my grandpa used to tell me when I was driving my friend home one night. It was about 10 pm and it was dark outside. We just reached her neighborhood and when I turned into it, I saw a weird looking dog. I told my friend about it and pointed at it but she didn't see anything. So I turned the car around to show her and I saw it staring at us. I pointed to it again and she said she didn’t see anything. At this point I was panicking because I was scared something was going to happen.I hope that one day when my kids come to me and ask about our heritage I can tell them this story.
