March 2019
Earlier this week, Dr. Kidwell, Dr. Grossman, and Language Art Consultants from each Canton school visited English classes from elementary through high school. It was a powerful day of learning, celebrating, and planning next steps in our vertical alignment process. Thanks to all the teachers who welcomed us all in!
It was another successful day with our TCRWP Staff developer, Kelley! This time teachers from Canton Middle School visited classrooms at our Canton Intermediate school to see grades 4, 5, and 6 workshop in action. The teachers from both schools had important conversations of alignment, instruction, and resources. Sarah Foster, Elana Chafetz, and Kim Turano all continued their work with Kelley focusing on small group conferences and individual conferring work. Looking forward to next time!
In December, the middle school English department had the chance to work with our new staff developer, Mrs. Kelley Lavery! We had a jam-packed day of reviewing the writing process, participating in study groups, and discussing our goals for the year! We look forward to more exciting work in February. Thank you to Ms. Foster, Ms. Chafetz, and Mrs. Turano for a great day of learning!
Anna Moberly and Leigh Connole both attended an annual conference recently to work with other ECE English educators and professionals.
Another fast-paced, exciting year at #EdCampCT. This is a great day for educators of all subject areas and grade levels to come together and share ideas of curriculum, instruction, and assessment. Three of our English teachers were able to attend this year: Dr. Kidwell, Ms. Moberly, and Mrs. Principe, as well as World Language teacher, Tara Smith. Looking forward to next year!
Dr. Kidwell had the opportunity to work with ELA consultant Kate Roberts over the summer. She learned a tremendous amount of information regarding reading and writing strategies, student assessment, and implementation of independent reading. The English department is excited to hold a year-long book study with Kate's newest title A Novel Approach. This will allow us to more effectively incorporate a workshop model approach to both independent and whole-class units.
Teacher College Reading and Writing Project Staff Developer Laurie Burke joined English, social studies, and special education teachers for two days of hands-on training and development. We worked closely to study techniques of student conferencing and aligning units of study.
Mrs. Chafetz, Ms. Foster, Mrs. Turano, along with Social Studies teachers Mrs. Starr and Ms. DeMaio all traveled to New York recently to engage in a full day of professional learning hosted by Columbia staff developer Audra Robb. The teachers spent their time working with new tools for literary analysis, writing stronger claims, and weaving various tones into student writing.
Mr. Rader, Ms. Kurt, Mrs. Turano, and Dr. Kidwell all attended a workshop from English teacher and expert on blended learning strategies Catlin Tucker. There we practiced new ways to innovate our classrooms with station rotations, conference grading, on and off-screen centers, flipped classrooms, and more! We highly recommend following @Catlin_Tucker for more information!
Mrs. Chafetz, Ms. Moberly, Mrs. Principe, and Mrs. Connole are all involved in a Master's in Educational Technology program through the University of St. Joseph's.
Ms. Foster has also begun her Master's in Educational Technology through the University of Connecticut. Congratulations to all of these teachers!
