Interview: The Joys of Reading
based on ideas from The Joy of Reading by Donalyn Miller and Teri S. Lesesne published by Heinemann in 2017.
Description
Students will choose adults to interview about the joys of reading/ leisure reading/ free reading. It will be up to the student to make arrangements of when to ask their chosen adult the questions (2-3 questions was the recommendation, if the adult has time for more, go for it). Adults will have the option to fill out the interview themselves, but this is not meant to be more homework for the grown-ups - students are the first choice to do the writing/typing. The point is to have the conversation, identifying people in their lives who can support their reading lives. It is more about the face-to-face social-emotional connection and the writing is a more secondary assessment.
Next Steps
Make a recommendation of a book to the adult you interviewed.
What was their reaction to your recommendation? (How did it go?)
What was your reaction to their response? (How did you feel about what they said?)
What book would you consider reading together with them?
Instruction manuals and how-to materials count.
