What is Battle of the Books?

Battle of the Books is a regional competition (although they do have them in other places) that we do within the middle and high schools of our BOCES and surrounding areas, including: Broadalbin-Perth, Fort Plain, Gloversville, Canajoharie, Cooperstown, Roxbury, WAJ, Oneonta among others. Between 16-20 books for middle school level and another list of the same size for high school are chosen by the librarians and club organizers at the schools by consensus. Students read the books on the list over the course of several months.

Competition

The competition consists of judges reading quotes from the books and students in teams of 3 or 4 face off against other schools in rounds, winning by correctly guessing the titles and authors of the books quoted.

Field Trips

Our traditional competition location has been the Albany Museum, including presentation by a guest author…but we have been fortunate enough in Canjo to also take the kids in a second field trip to boost morale and team spirit. This year we hope to go to LEGOland. The kids read a lot and it’s all to encourage love of literature and meeting other kids who share that.

Progress

2023, we made it to the finals! This year our goal is to win champsionship.

Canajoharie High School has a team as well and they won the championships 2023 and took home the trophy!
