Today we are going to learn how to draw a linear (straight line) graph using the gradient and y-intercept method.

You will need a pencil, ruler and your math book. (These are all up the front)

When we have completed the teaching part of the day you will need the worksheets on linear graphs and the BETA textbook.

There is another worksheet available that uses DESMOS which we will get to on Wednesday.

Both these videos help you to draw a straight line graph given an equation in the form y = mx + c.

m = the gradient or slope of the line

c = the y - intercept, this is where the straight line intersects with the y - axis (vertical).

Remember: the bigger the gradient the steeper the graph and, if the gradient is negative the line is going 'downhill'

Graph from slope-intercept equationTo graph a linear equation in slope-intercept form, we can use the information given by that form. For example, y=2x+3 tells us that the slope of the line is 2 and the y-intercept is at (0,3). This gives us one point the line goes through, and the direction we should continue from that point to draw the entire line.

This can be done on a Google Document - take screen shots of the graphs (where it says 'print'), copy to your document, and answer the questions underneath your graphs.
