There are so many outdoor spaces that we can share and enjoy - even if we don’t have our own gardens.
Of course there are the wild open spaces and relative unspoilt countryside, but even in our towns and cities there are special places that we can enjoy in different ways.
Here in Cambridge we have a new farm!
CoFarm Cambridge is a company limited by guarantee established by the CoFarm Foundation to co-create and run Cambridge city’s first community farm with and for the community.
The farm is being developed off Barnwell Road, on 7-acres of privately-owned agricultural land right next to Coldham's Common - a very special green space in Cambridge.
Work got underway at the end of May 2020, with the installation of rabbit-proof fencing around the core 2-acre organic market garden zone of the farm. The growing is supported by over 150 volunteers (so far) from the local community.
The farm, which is already highly productive, is donating all of its produce in 2020 to 7 emergency food hubs which have been established across Cambridge to support people experiencing food insecurity, as a response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Within 25 miles of Cambridge there several other community supported agriculture schemes. Community supported agriculture (CSA) is a partnership between farmers and consumers in which the responsibilities, risks and rewards of farming are shared.
The orchard is run on organic lines, with lots of habitats for wildlife, including beetle banks, bird boxes and bat boxes.
Transition Cambridge also manages a number of Growing Spaces providing edible crops which passers by are invited to share!
Some of these are on a fairly small scale but can still involve a lot of work as the refurbishment team found a few weeks ago at the beds outside Daily Bread!
