This was our last song that came to us that we were certain that we were going to cover. It was a group decision, and I thought that since it came to us later I can fit it onto one page.
In this particular song, there are 2 guitars in completely different tuning. The lead guitar is in Eb and the other guitar is in this strange unique Eb Minor Maj 7th tuning. I play Billy Corgans (The lead guitarists) parts. This video provided will be used extensively to learn this song
Billy Corgan doesn't tend to show off, he rather plays to suits the song which is very professional, here is an example of him playing.
Our first run through was not the greatest, you can hear throughout the song constant mistakes from everybody. My guitar was out of tune, Igor didn't know his parts, Ben didn't know his parts and Sage wasn't present. Not our best, probably our worst. This was recorded before my research, henceforth my parts sounding awful.
This scale will help me get down the solo in The smashing Pumpkins solo as the solo in mayonaise follows the pentatonic pattern.
In this video, I demonstrate the scale that I have learnt. I believe that this will help me learn the solo for mayonaise.
The video present consists of me learning the solo to mayonaise, which was my main goal for this video, I wanted to nail down the solo and have it down by muscle memory. At 0:11 I hit the wrong note and scuff the solo up completely, one single mistake in a guitar solo is crucial, in a sense that every note counts, however I do learn the solo in the video below. The video I used earlier has helped me significantly, and guided me through the solo, note by note. As we can see in the second video I finally got the solo down to every last note which is a significant improvement to the last video. Moving forward I can finally implement the solo into rehearsal and we can, as a band progress even further into the song. In conclusion, taking time out to learn the solo down has massively improved my confidence and ability.
In this website that my band mate Igor provided me, i was able to see exactly the effects that Billy Corgan used. Thanks to this website I was able to see that Billy Corgan used an MXR PHASE 90, Big Muff Fuzz and reverb. I may not posses these pedals, however I can try my best to replicate with what I have. Either so, this website has helped me a lot during this song as it has shown me exactly what I need.
This video discusses the infamous whistle, what it actually is is a really cheap guitar that Billy Corgan bought, and every time he would stop playing it would create that whistle noise. In my opinion it is a very iconic and important asset to the song.
I did however encounter an issue, and that being: I do not have the money to spend on a pawned guitar, so i am left alone to replicate it the best I can.
I replicated the whistle by using natural harmonics. By using plenty of fuzz distortion I was able to simply play a natural harmonic on the 5th fret which sounds quite similar to the record.
Here is a video of me doing so.
In Mayonaise, Billy Corgan uses a phaser effect in the intro, solo and outro, and this video will help me perfect my tone for this cover as it goes into depth on how phaser actually works and how to use phaser.
This is a video log of me going in depth of how I have achieved the tone, and how i did it. I go in depth on how I replicated billy Corgans tone using my BOSS ME 80. In the video I showcase my phaser settings, and my fuzz settings, which is what Billy Corgan used in mayonaise.
This was a later recording done once the research was complete we recorded this log.
The whole band was present during this rehearsal. the main focus was to record mayonaise in its entirety. My personal goal was to get through the song and see if my research has paid off and to focus on my timing. The overall goal was to focus on timing to be honest, we needed to get the song sounding snappy and on point and we will do that by going through the song.
From the start of the song you can see how everyone's research has paid off, as the tones are on point, however at 0:34 we can hear an error from Igors behalf. At 1:14 the song shifts dynamically, and we hear this very great replica of tones being mixed well greatly. This was definitely one of our strengths as our tones were on point. At 2:23 you can hear my whistle being executed in great succession I must say, my research on Billy Corgan has really helped me during that segment. At 5:10 I Completely missed my queue for the outro solo, messing it up completely. this is something I need to develop, as it is an important asset to the song because if we cant finish clean, the whole song is rubbish in my opinion.
my research on Billy Corgans tones has significantly paid off, as we can hear that it is very accurate throughout the video and I must add that I feel quite proud of myself for it. My focus on tones has provided a nice flow and drive to the song, replicating it to the studio version quite nicely.
Moving forward, I must work on coming in on time during that outro as it is a very important asset and dynamic change to the song.
Otherwise, this rehearsal was was productive in the term of solidifying our cover of the song, however I will go home and work on the outro solo as this cannot happen again.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PbiPjkVRaU in this video that i provided earlier, there is a time stamp at 4:54 which I will use.
In this video we are all present. This was our final take on Mayonaise before the show, fully developed. You can see that our research paid off well as it is a huge improvement from the last video, we have our parts all nailed down through hard work. There was yet again an error in the outro solo, however that was caused by Igor coming in too early which sent us all in the wrong direction. My research into Billy Corgan has paid off well, as if it wasn't for that error in the outro, it would've definitely been flawless. Otherwise this has been a significant improvement from the last video. This playthrough definitely solidified us in the sense of comfort and confidence that we have all the parts and sections worked out.
