There are many reasons why too stations may not be able to hear eachother - they could be too far away, their equipment could be malfunctioning, or there could be obstructions such as hills or thick vegetation between them.
The key prowords when relaying a message are:
Relay to - Who the message is to be relayed to
Send - I am ready to receive your message
From - The originator of the message
Through me - Relay your message through me
Relay through - Transmit your message through callsign X. This is normally given by the Net Control Station to let you know who is the best callsign to relay through
A-01 wants to relay a message to C-01 however a hill has obstructed the radio signal.
These examples show the different ways that the message can be relayed to C-01.
C-01 this is A-01 - move to grid 124 726 - over
C-01 this is A-01 - move to grid 124 726 - over
C-01 this is A-01 - nothing heard - out to you. B-01 this is A-01 - relay to C-01 - move to grid 124 726 - over
A-01 this is B-01 - wilco - out to you. C-01 this is B-01 - from A-01 - move to grid 124 726 - over
B-01 this is C-01 - wilco - out.
In this scenario, A-01 has instructed B-01 to relay a message to C-01. This can be used when A-01 knows that B-01 has contact with C-01.
C-01 this is A-01 - dinner is at 1730hrs - over
C-01 this is A-01 - dinner is at 1730hrs - over
A-01 this is D-01 - through me - over
C-01 this is A-01 - nothing heard - out to you. D-01 this is A-01 - relay to C-01 - dinner is at 1730hrs - over
A-01 this is D-01 - wilco - out to you. C-01 this is D-01 - from A-01 - dinner is at 1730hrs - over
D-01 this is C-01 - roger - out
In this scenario D-01 has offered to relay A-01's message "through me". This is because D-01 will know they have contact with C-01.
C-01 this is A-01 - move to grid 124 726 - over
C-01 this is A-01 - move to grid 124 726 - over
A-01 this is Sunray - relay through Starlight - over
C-01 this is A-01 - nothing heard - out to you. Starlight this is A-01 - relay to C-01 - return to base - over
A-01 this is Starlight - wilco - out to you. C-01 this is Starlight - from A-01 - return to base - over
Starlight this is C-01 - wilco - out
In this scenario Sunray has directed A-01 to "relay through" Starlight. This is usually used when the NCS can identify the best station to relay your message.
