Hand signals are used by militaries around the world to allow soldiers to communicate with eachother in the field. They allow soldiers to communicate silently so as to not give their position away. Hand signals are used to move positions, change formation, or to identify hazards or hostiles.
The NZCF use hand signals based off the New Zealand Army - but with the obvious difference that NZCF do not carry weapons or encounter hostiles. We instead use them when patrolling when there is a need to stay silent or stay hidden.
Some key points when using hand signals include:
Always use your non-master hand to give a hand signal
Signals are past to every patrol member. Cadets need to check forwards and backwards for signals being passed on
Signals need to be accurate and deliberate
Signals need to be passed quietly - making noises defeats the point of hand signals!
